Cyclists on a bike lane on a cloudy day in Amsterdam

This photograph is partly about bicycles and Amsterdam, partly about that interesting and dark sky, partly about Amsterdam architecture and buildings that lean, and partly about that guy in the foreground. This summer was our first visit to Amsterdam. We stayed just outside of the central city and walked a few blocks to get to the well-known areas each day. For many years I was a very active cyclist in the US, but this is an entirely different scene. Almost no lycra, dropped handlebars road bikes, few mountain bikes… and lots of people in street clothes riding very utilitarian bikes… and parking them everywhere. Somehow the intersecting types of traffic — foot, transit, canal, bicycle, car — seem to coexist here, though it can be quite confusing at times for a first-time visitor.

This day’s light was remarkable. There was thin sunlight, but there were also some lovely dark clouds in the sky. If memory serves, we were in light rain later that evening as we ate dinner outside. We ended up talking to a couple who live in Amsterdam about many things. I confessed that I had initially been mildly disappointed to find the cloudy weather when we arrived, expecting it to be sunny. They more or less laughed and pointed out that this was the more typical sort of conditions. (They claimed that I would not see blue sky. That turned out to be wrong… but only by a little bit!)

Canal Boats, Amsterdam

Scene along one of Amsterdam’s larger canals

In contrast to the last photograph of an Amsterdam canal that I posted yesterday (that one was more intimate and included lots of trees) this canal is closer to the center of the city and is not as much softened by trees and so forth. Here the water is much wider and larger boats can pass. In fact, a number of tour boats are moored along the right side and in the center of the frame.

Aside from the curve of the canal and the ubiquitous boats, it was the light that caught my attention here. The buildings at the right are more or less front-lit by the late day sun, while in the distance dark clouds are about to bring rain. A single smaller boat heads up the canal at the far left.

We were staying at the lower tip of Manhattan, and on the morning of our first full day there this past August we decided to head out for a walk. We more or less followed the shoreline along the Hudson, eventually getting up into the streets numbered in the twenties before heading back toward the center of Manhattan.

These days the walk along the Hudson is mostly quite scenic, with walking/jogging paths along the waterfront and occasionally even more park-like facilities. In many places there are great views across the river toward New Jersey and some other areas. (The views back toward Manhattan are mostly up…) When we started our walk there was a threat of rain, but by the time I made this photograph the clouds were breaking up.

Buildings and Canal Reflection

Amsterdam buildings reflected on the surface of a canal

The number of ways people get around in the confines of central Amsterdam is utterly astonishing. Yes, there are cars, though fewer than in a typical American City. There are pedestrians — tons of them. Cyclists are everywhere — I had heard that they love bicycles in Amsterdam, but I wasn’t prepared for the number of them. There are lanes for all three forms of transportation, and those of use who aren’t used to this have a hard time keeping them straight, and we have to be on constant guard against accidentally wandering into a bicycle lane. And, of course, there are canals.

The canals thread through central Amsterdam in surprising ways, passing between and under the other means of transport. If you are on foot you look down at them, but those on the boats have the opposite experience, sitting close to the water and looking up at the rest of the city. Here I photographed across one of the canals so that I could capture the reflections of the colorful — and frequently strangely aligned — buildings running alongside.
