The historic Ladies Pavilion at the Lake on an autumn day in Central Park, Manhattan.

Discovering that this place is called the “Ladies Pavilion” was a bit of a surprise. I have been to this spot quite a few times, and I had seen the small building. But as I worked on the photograph I decided to find out more. It was originally constructed over 150 years ago as a shelter for carriage riders in a different location, then moved here in the early 1900s. Over the decades it languished and was in ruins before it was restored in the 1970s. It is has a beautiful view of The Lake and the Manhattan skyline.

The photograph was almost an afterthought. When we arrived here I went around to the other side of Hernshead, the rocky feature on the left side of the frame, where I photographed the lake. Then I came back this direction and walked past the pavilion to photograph some nearby foliage. But this little structure kept calling to me, and I finally stopped to photograph it with The Lake and the urban skyline beyond.

Hernshead, Autumn

A person sits on the Hernshead outcropping among fall colors, Central Park, Manhattan.

We were in New York City for a few days before Thanksgiving. (We left early to avoid the holiday rush.) Our two sons and daughters-in-law live and work there, and they have told us for years to come during spring and autumn instead of our usual winter and summer visits. They are right. — Manhattan was full of lovely fall colors, not just here in the “wilds” of Central Park,” but even along busy streets and avenues. This photograph juxtaposes one of the park’s rocky outcroppings, “The Lake,” autumn trees, and a bit of the Manhattan skyline.

There is always something new to discover or learn about the place. For example, take the name “Hernshead.” Before sharing this photograph I looked at maps to see if the spot has a name, and I discovered that it does. But it is a strange word. If you asked me what “Hernshead” means I might have said, “Don’t know, but maybe someone’s name?” I would have been wrong. According to the Park Conservancy, it was named when the park was created in the 1800s because the outcropping’s shape suggested the form of a heron’s head… and “hern” is apparently an old, alternate spelling of “heron.”

Rainy Day, Central Park

In the past I have tried to explain how and why a “landscape photographer” (a designation that can be problematic…) might find urban photography interesting. Often I point out the appeal of the differences between the two types, but I’ve also noted similarities. I think this photograph gets at the latter. Rather than explaining, I’ll just ask you to imagine replacing those buildings with appropriate mountains or cliff faces.

The photograph comes from my recent “spring” weekend in Manhattan,… during which I experienced three days of pretty continuous rain. I went out on this morning specifically to photograph the low clouds that were enveloping the upper stories of the tallest buildings. I ended up at the lower end of Central Park, where it was possible to juxtapose a natural scene (spring trees and exposed schist outcroppings) with the characteristic Manhattan buildings.

Spring trees and a Manhattan schist bedrock outcropping in Central Park, Manhattan.

This and several other photographs from my end-of-April visit to Manhattan will be interspersed with earlier photographs of the natural world over the next few days. I wrote earlier about my bad luck with New York weather — I went in April hoping for the beautiful spring weather than New Yorkers had told me about, only to have three days of rain! I managed to get out for a walk into the spring-green but very wet reaches of lower Central Park on this morning.

Considering that it is located in the middle of this huge metropolis, Central Park still surprises me with moments of quiet and (near) solitude. There were plenty of people out on this rainy morning, though the crowds were suppressed a bit as I walked up this path through trees and near some of the exposed Manhattan schist bedrock formations that are found throughout the park.
