Alfama and Panteão Nacional
“Alfama and Panteão Nacional” — The dome of the Panteão Nacional rises above Alfama, Lisbon.

The Panteão Nacional is one of several sites along this ridge above the Alfama district of Lisbon. It and the others command a sweeping view of the city and the water, but they also form focal points for views of the area from elsewhere in the city. I photographed this view from the Portas do Sol viewpoint area.

As striking as the building and its dome are, the Alfama itself is really the show here, in my view. The colorful buildings with their red roofs are packed tightly together along narrow and curving streets.

Alfama Steps

We wandered quite a bit during our May visit to Lisbon this year. (This was part of a 6-week trip that took us to Portugal, Spain, Belgium, and New York City.) When I write “wandered,” I mean this quite literally — we frequently head out with only the vaguest idea of what we’ll explore. In this case, we knew we were headed to the Alfama district, but beyond that we would wing it.

The Alfama is full of narrow, twisty, and often steep streets — just the sort of place to wander slowly. Roughly speaking we first crossed a section of the lower reaches of the district, and then we turned and began climbing. Along the way, we took many detours. If a side street looked interesting we went that way. I made this photograph in a quiet, out of the way area, where steps led uphill between the closely-spaced buildings.

A Lisbon Street
“A Lisbon Street” — A narrow, curving street in Alfama, lined with colorful buildings.

From my limited experience, this feels like a “typical” street of Lisbon’s Alfama district… except that the street is wider than many of the passageways. The lines suggest that it is two lanes wide — though I imagine that when a trolley goes up and down those tracks there isn’t a lot of room for anyone else!

There is a lot in this scene that attracted my attention. The street itself with its pairs of tracks and optimistic center dividing line is one. The stacked and tightly spaced buildings are another. And I love the saturated colors, from the nearly pure white to the many yellow buildings, and the bits of blue here and there.

Trogir Waterfront, Morning
“Trogir Waterfront, Morning” — Morning along the waterfront as clouds build, Trogir, Croatia.

I made this photograph close to the conclusion of early morning photography in Trogir, Croatia. We arrived in the old town on the island before sunrise and photographed the nearly deserted narrow, cobblestone streets, the architecture, and a few people who were out early, getting the town ready for the coming onslaught of visitors. As we finished — and before stoping for coffee nearby — we emerged on this side of the island, facing the channel between it and the part of the town across the water.

It was a really lovely morning. The warm sunlight was muted a bit as clouds appeared and a large thunderstorm appeared to develop over the city of Split, down the coast. Here we just had the over-spill from that mighty cloud — just enough to make the sky more interesting and to soften the light a bit.
