We were surprised by this spectacular canyon soon after we began our return drive towards Ullapool from Applecross, on the western Scottish coast. The road climbed steadily from Applecross, passed through barren alpine country, and offered great views to the west toward Skye and other islands. The road leveled off near the high point as it arrived at the pass.

I had been thinking about photographing in this grove for two days prior to making this photograph. I had looked it over while driving past, and had even gotten out and wandered through it without taking pictures. What finally brought me back was wind — a tremendous wind storm that was making it difficult to photograph out in the open.
My first idea about this location and the wind was that I would photograph the fallen leaves. But as I entered the grove I did not see the shot I was looking for, so I kept walking. I finally came to what looked like the end of the path at the base of a tree-covered hill. Still not seeing a photograph, I turned around and started back. It was only then that I saw the glow of the backlit canopy of leaves and found this composition.

Not all of Santiago de Compostela, Spain looks like this scene, but if you visit and wander around the historic old part of town you will find such places. The primary streets, although also narrow, can be quite busy at times. But off to the side are little streets and passageways that are far less crowded, especially at the right times of day.
This is an exceptionally narrow street. You are not going to drive a car here — a scooter perhaps. The buildings are old enough that they have acquired some off-kilter qualities, with walls leaning slightly.

On this evening we had crossed the Douro River via the famous Dom Luis I bridge to join the throngs watching the sunset from its south side. People staked out viewing locations almost everywhere, though the Garden of the Moors area seemed to be the most popular — with musicians and food carts ad more. We took a different approach and climbed up to the Mosteiro da Serra do Pilar.
After sunset we started our walk back to the north side of the bridge and our lodgings along the edge of the Ribeira district. Dusk was arriving as we re-crossed the bridge, so I paused to photograph the scene — the lively waterfront area, the buildings rising up from the river, the water’s winding path toward the sea, and some evening clouds overhead.
