While Scotland’s Isle of Skye is, for good reason, a very popular place to visit, you can also find great views of the Isle and its mountains from along Scotland’s less-populated western coast. After our visit to Skye we headed north to Ullapool, and from there drove a long loop out to the village of Applecross. Before turning south toward that spot the route hugged the coastline, offering continuous views across the water to islands including Skye.

There is a seasonal cycle to my landscape photography, which should be no surprise since these cycles are visible in the landscape itself. This takes me back to certain subjects almost every year: migratory birds and access to desert and to snowy landscapes in winter, access to warmer places and new life in spring, the Sierra and other travel opportunities in summer, the colors of autumn. This year’s seasonal change is well underway, as I think I’m getting close to the end of this year’s new Death Valley photographs.
This is yet another one from a very fruitful visit to this canyon in the mountains of Death Valley. We drove there, hiked in, and then took our time hiking back down, pausing frequently to photograph the narrow sections in gentle afternoon light. In this photograph, as in a few others from this location, the dark and banded foreground rock in the shadows contrasts with the lighter walls that get more of the warm-colored sunlight.

Reflected light in a twisting desert canyon as it approaches Death Valley
To walk into a canyon like this one from a huge valley such as Death Valley is to walk from an overwhelming, immense space into a smaller, more intimate place. In the canyons distances are often measured in feet rather than miles, and long distance views are most often cut off entirely. This is especially true when entering such canyons where the route often begins in a wide wash above the Valley, then constrict through the mouth of the canyon, and soon begins to wind back and forth in a serpentine manner between hills or cliffs.
The trip back out often seems to have a different feeling. It usually takes less time, partly due to the downhill slope and even more because one is now retracing familiar terrain rather than discovering it for the first time. In many cases, the closer one gets to the outlet of the canyon the more that signs of the valley below appear. The canyon walls become shorter, and views over the nearer walls being to reveal blue sky and distant mountains instead of more canyon walls. Before long the light changes and the route leaves the canyon confines and is again back in the huge, open space.

The first birds that attracted my attention when I began to seriously photograph them in California’s Central Valley were not sandhill cranes, but rather geese. A series of coincidences led me to (finally!) “discover” the great winter bird migration, something I should have known about much earlier, having lived in this state for nearly my entire life. I recall one winter drive up the Valley perhaps 15 years ago when I first saw and was amazed by flocks of geese in dusk light above the Sacramento Valley.
Once I started photographing these birds I soon discovered that there’s a lot more going on than those astonishing huge flocks of geese — many other birds, all of them with different behavior patterns and attractions. It did not take long to discover sandhill cranes, birds that I had read about but not understood all the way back in college. While they can be ungainly on the ground, their pattern of flight is often magnificent and their cries now characterize the audio winter landscape of the Valley for me. This pair had just arisen from its overnight home along a wetland pond and was flying past and toward the dawn sun.
