This was an evening of beautiful light, a surprise or two, and at least one missed opportunity that will be hard to find again. We were along the far northern coast of California, primarily to photograph late-spring redwood forest subjects… but it is hard to ignore the Pacific Ocean when it is right next door! In the evening we headed to a nearby coastal area with rocky islands and seas stacks and an open view of the western horizon. — and there were clouds to catch the last colorful light. I photographed right through sunset, until the light was becoming quite dim.

That last point — “photographed right though sunset” — is important. The light show doesn’t necessarily end with the sun drops below the horizon. In fact, some of the most astonishing light often comes quite a bit later as the colors deepen and begin to change from warm sunset tones to the bluer tones of night. The sun was gone in my location, but somewhere far to the west it was reflecting upwards to illuminate the clouds from below, coloring thin clouds and wispy bits of virga.

Earlier this month we got away for a few days of photography in far Northern California — the redwood country, but also the never-far-away coast. We stayed in Crescent City the first couple of nights, just below the Oregon border, since this place provides good access to several of the redwood parks. The days are very long in far Northern California at this time of year, and even with several hours of morning photography and several hours of work in the evening, there is a lot of “in between time.” On this day we decided to enjoy an early dinner in town before heading out for evening photography. Eventually we worked our way to this spot along a bluff at the edge of town.

I had a particular subject in mind when we arrived, but the conditions were evolving in a somewhat unexpected way. A weak weather front was approaching from the northwest, and it was clear that its cloud shield was going to block the sun as it descended toward the horizon. I made a few quick exposures in pseudo-evening light, and then the light went gray. It was difficult to say for sure, but it looked like there might be a gap between the bottom of the clouds and the ocean, and in anticipation of the sun’s light coming through that gap right at sunset I quickly moved to a different location that placed this sea stack with its small tree in line with some more distant rocks and the likely position of the setting sun.

We recently returned from a few days along California’s far northern coast. We spent a couple of nights in Crescent City before moving south to stay in the Eureka area for a couple more days. We were mostly there to photograph the redwoods, but there was a lot more to see and photograph than just that subject. (In fact, one of our primary targets, the annual rhododendron bloom, was not producing a lot of flowers during our visit.)

The coastal area in Crescent City is quite spectacular, from the ocean just below the road running along its edge to the distant view of the infamous St. George Reef lighthouse. I have photographed from the residential area at the end of town before, and since we were there in the evening we decided to head that way again on this evening. The light was beautiful and evolving nicely… but it was clear that the clouds of a weather front to the northwest would block the last light. So I quickly set up this photograph and made two exposures as the final direct light hit the coast.

This photograph came about in a somewhat odd way, if I recall correctly — though it isn’t the first to happen in a similar impromptu manner. This area of California’s north coast is beautiful and spectacular. We were there mainly to photograph in the redwoods, hoping that the oft-photographed foggy conditions would coincide with the rhododendron bloom. We got the bloom… but not the fog. It was about as clear up there as it ever gets. This sometimes made for slightly awkward photography. The foggy conditions can (or should I say, “could?”) extend the duration of photography, but without at times we found ourselves out of things to photograph.

My memory is that something like that happened on this evening. We had been photographing in redwoods south of Crescent City, with some success, but the light quickly passed through the ideal stage (enough of it, but not too much direct light) and became too dark to photograph, especially giving a bit of wind that was interfering with long exposures. So we headed back to town… only to see a sky over the Pacific that looked like it could evolve into something special. We headed out to the edge of the water, and I “made my stand” at this spot overlooking this large rock connected to the mainland by a narrow spit of sand. (Aside from the beauty of the scene, there was one strange moment. As I stood behind my tripod, some slightly inebriated fellow holding a beer can walked up and wobbly inquired, ” Is that the Canon 70-200?” It obviously wasn’t at that point. Then, “WERE you using the 70-200 earlier?” OK, yes, I had been. “Thanks,” he replied,” that’s what I thought. That means my buddy owes me another beer.”)
