This photograph comes from a trip to California’s Central Valley on New Years Day with a group of friends – and I can’t imagine a better way to start a new year then by meeting up with friends in the pre-dawn darkness to begin a day photographing the migratory birds and generally hanging out with good people!

For me, photographing these marvelous birds turns out to be about more than the birds themselves, as remarkable as they are as a visual subject. There is a whole range of sensory associations that come to mind when I think of these winter visits to the marshlands to photograph the geese and cranes and other birds. The sound of thousands of geese never ceases to (literally) make me smile when I first hear it, and the sound of the cranes, especially when it comes from overhead or float through the fog, is evocative. The cold and damp and frequently foggy atmosphere is part of it, as is the long drive through the pre-dawn darkness (sometimes alone) and then arriving to find friends waiting. And the landscape itself draws me, which surprises me given how much it contrasts with the wilder landscapes of mountains and deserts and coastline. Often when I’m photographing birds, I interrupt that work to photograph this landscape, which is what I did here. I lined up a few trees, side-lit by the slightly fog-softened light, against the blue haze of clearing tule fog.

Back in February I spent a few days in Washington state, and during this visit I had an opportunity to spend one full day photographing in lower Skagit Valley north of Seattle. Among other things, main attractions there at this time of year can include spectacular views of some of the nearby snow-covered peaks of the Cascade range (or so I’m told… ;-), impressive flocks of migratory birds including trumpeter swans and snow geese, and other birds such as owls and bald eagles. Having recently become a big fan of photographing the migratory birds of California’s Central Valley, my main goal on this visit was to photograph the geese and swans.

I arrived in the area just before sunrise – or what would have been sunrise if it hadn’t been completely socked in by clouds and intermittently raining lightly. After a bit of looking around I found a great location for photographing gigantic flocks of snow geese as they landed, collected on the ground, and then suddenly took of in huge groups. A bit later in the day my brother Richard joined me. Since he actually knows this area, having lived and photographed here for many years, I took his lead and we moved on to look for bald eagles. (Well, we also moved on to have a wonderful brunch in a nearby town first…) After a bit of driving around we came to this spot which I understand is some sort of tree farm. Among these tall, slender, straight, and tightly packed trees, we spotted a few bald eagles roosting in the upper branches. We found one beautiful bird in trees very close to the road, stopped, and began to quietly get ready to shoot – but the bird was having none of it, and it flew to other trees that were too far off for photography. However, this grove itself seemed interesting to me, and in the soft, cloudy light I like the way that the white trunks and the dense small branches appeared against the background of a further ridge.

A winter-dormant tree is backlit by morning sun in the grasslands of the Calero Hills, California.

This tree and I are old friends at this point. (If you were to snoop around enough at my web site you might find other photographs of the same tree.) It is at a local county park where I have hiked for many years, and it is not far from the parking lot at the park, sitting on the far side of a small pond and somewhat inaccessible. So I almost always pass it at the start of any hike there, and I have photographed it in just about any conditions that you can imagine: summer heat, morning, evening, fog…

I hadn’t been there for a while, but I managed to find time for a short hike on Christmas Eve day this year. The trail approaches the small pond near the tree by ascending up a very shallow valley. There are thick reeds growing around the pond, and often an egret can be found at the lake. With that possibility in mind, I usually approach the pond slowly and quietly and often with my long lens already on the camera. I did so on this day… but no egret! The water level was very low after a fall season with almost no rain, so there were few birds there at all. But at just about the time I arrived the sun was beginning to peak over a nearby hill and it was back-lighting this tree against the still shaded grass-covered hillside beyond.

Bare branches of dormant trees against a cloud-dappled winter sky over the Central Valley of California.

This was a bit of a “grab shot,” made almost as an afterthought once I finished with another photograph and was taking down the tripod and putting gear away – hence it is a hand held photograph. I was somewhat aware of these clouds, since I had been photographing the sky (and other things) in a different direction, though those photographs included more distant subjects and a lot of intervening haze and clearing fog. Here, as is often the case during foggy conditions in the Central Valley, the shallow tule fog was in the process of clearing and leaving a very clear view of the sky straight overhead, even while a horizontal views were still obstructed by remaining haze.

The trees are from a more or less random grouping that happened to be next to the road where I had stopped. I cannot say what kind of trees they are. It was my good luck that these wispy (mares tail?) clouds happened to float over at the moment when I was here and looking up. After making this photograph, I got concluded my photography for the day and headed home.
