Autumn Forest, Fog

Autumn Forest, Fog
“Autumn Forest, Fog” — Autumn fog drifts through a forest in California coastal hills.

Recently it has been very foggy across great swaths of the California landscape. Tule (or radiation) fog has turned the Central Valley cold and gray for weeks. At times the fog has spilled through the delta and over mountain passes into the San Francisco Bay Area. On one such day I decided to head to nearby woods to see what I could photograph.

I ended up on a narrow road heading into the hills, a road that I have known for decades — though I don’t believe I have ever photographed there before. At the head of a narrow canyon, just before the road ascended steeply to rise above the fog, I stopped to photograph this autumn scene. A few trees leaned this way and that, fog muted the light, and autumn leaves were everywhere.

Dawn, Fog, and Frost

Dawn, Fog, and Frost
“Dawn, Fog, and Frost” — Dawn fog drifts above frost-covered landscape at Tuolumne Meadows.

During most of the summer months, after the snow clears out (usually) by June, this meadow is a green place, often sunny, warm and inviting. I’ve been known to wander out into it and sit on the banks of the river or perch myself on a rock to admire the view. But as summer ends and autumn approaches, things change — the meadow becomes dry, temperatures begin to moderate, and before long it is clear that the brief summer season is ending.

This was one of those “autumn is coming” mornings. I arrived to find low fog drifting above frost-covered ground. I had to work quickly as this kind of fog usually doesn’t stick around for long, and the frost would melt when the sun rose. But for a few moments in this predawn light, it truly felt like winter in this meadow.

Oaks, Meadow, Drifting Smoke

Oaks, Meadow, Drifting Smoke
“Oaks, Meadow, Drifting Smoke” — Smoke from a management fire drifts among autumn black oak trees in Yosemite Valley.

This photograph and the circumstances that led to it are a reminder about how things sometimes turn out differently than you might expect. I had left for Yosemite Valley hours before sunrise, planning to arrive in time to photograph in early morning light. Everything was going fine until I got into the lower Valley and discovered that smoke from a managed fire was blanketing the subject! I was quite disappointed as I drove along the south side of the Valley. But there I was, and there the smoke was, and I was there to make photographs — so I decided to see what possibilities might remain.

I crossed over to the north side of the valley, and looked back into the sunlight and these trees silhouetted in the drifting smoke, which was now glowing in the backlight from sunlight coming over the Valley rim. The backlight made the brown autumn oak leaves glow, and the slowly drifting smoke constantly altered the landscape, sometimes revealing and sometimes hiding features.
