“A Red Rock Canyon” — A rocky canyon filled with trees twists through the landscape of Capitol Reef National Park.
The photograph comes from a trip some years back that took me to Capitol Reef National Park. Although it was challenging to find the right composition, I wanted to get a photograph of this bend in an anonymous red rock canyon where trees were tucked into the edge of hollowed out rock. The feature is fascinating, but it is more or less unmarked, like so many similar features in this landscape.
“Morning Sky, Edge of Lake Manly” — Morning cloud-filled sky above the shore of Lake Manly.
It looks like I’m finally coming to the end of this season’s Death Valley Photographs. But there were quite a few, many featuring Lake Manly, the temporary lake flooding Badwater Basin. When the lake appears after a wet year it gives us an unusual opportunity in this desert landscape — to photograph reflected sky and mountains where we would usually see a salt flat.
“Blue Hour Sky, Lake Manly” — A cloud-filled blue hour morning sky above Lake Manly.
When I go out to photograph I often have ideas about what my subject will be and even how it may look. On this morning I was thinking of colorful dawn light, perhaps illuminating some early morning clouds, and the first direct light striking the peaks of the distant Panamint Range mountains. Instead, the cloud deck was thicker than expected, and instead of sunrise colors I had something more like morning blue hour light.
When photographing landscape, there is a lot that is out of our control — the light, the clouds, and more. We have to be ready to work with the conditions that we are given. So on this morning I decided to “go with the blue” rather than hoping for warm colors that were not going to appear.
“Utah Morning Sky” — A cloud-filled dawn sky aboe Capitol Reef, National Park, Utah.
Back in 2014 a friend and I met up at Capitol Reef National Park for a few days of photography. I was on a long trip, first shooting in Southern Utah alone before we joined up at Capitol Reef. (Afterward I met other friends at Grand Staircase-Escalante, made a quick visit to Boulder, and eventually joined my family at Zion.) I made this photograph early in the morning on the day we headed into the back country along Notom Bullfrog Road.
Although my main goals were further down this backcountry road, soon after we turned onto it the sun rose and the early morning light illuminated a beautiful cloud-filled sky. We had no choice but to stop! We quickly found a high location with a panoramic view and set up to photograph this marvelous sky and light.
