A lone creosote bush among sand dunes, Death Valley.

The sand dunes often surprise first-time visitor with much more evidence of life than they might expect. We tend to think of dunes as being…. just sand. They are largely sand, but things live and grow out there, too — from reptiles, birds, and mammals to all kinds of highly adapted plants. In fact, sometimes when I’m trying to photograph a landscape of “just sand” I have to work to keep the other stuff out of the frame!

The bushes are well adapted to the dunes. While the lower branches eventually die and turn brown, in spring the upper portion of the plant can be intensely green and covered with small yellow flowers. On a windless day you might be surprised by the hum of bees swarming the flowers!

The photograph comes from Carrizo Plain National Monument, but it could be anywhere across a wide range of California locations this time of year. Beginning in late winter and extending into early spring, California enters what I call the “impossibly green season.” While much of the state can be brown and dry most of the year, colors near the ned of the wet season are amazing — in the best years and in the right places the wildflower displays are astonishing.

I was actually more in landscape photographer mode on this afternoon, focusing on long views across flower-carpeted valleys toward distant mountains, as sunlight and passing showers moved over the area. But this photograph goes in a different direction, focusing up close on these flowers and intentionally blurring the background.

Blossoms, Almond Orchard

Almond trees blooming in California’s Central Valley.

On this early March morning I was out in Central California photographing the last of the season’s geese and a few of their feathered colleagues. Because of the recent heavy rains there were pools of water everywhere. This provided the birds with more than the usual number of ponds, and many of them chose to land it places inaccessible to me. Eventually I decided to look around for other things to photograph.

As I headed up a nearby road I noticed that the vast orchards were blooming. It is quite a sight, and I understand that these regions are now starting to promote the almond blossom season as an event. The location I visited was fairly remote, and the road I took to this orchard was not one that many city folks would want to drive! I pulled over next to an orchard and photographed the backlit blooms.

Alcove With Flowers

Alcove With Flowers
“Alcove With Flowers” — Freshly-picked daffodils in a pot in a garden alcove.

This was a rather serendipitous photograph. We had been photographing in this large garden for an hour or two. The sun was getting higher in the sky, making the light less appealing for photographing foliage, and we decided it was time to move on. We were on our way toward the exit of the garden when I passed through a gate in a brick wall and just happen to look back… and see this little scene built into the wall.
