Spring pink dogwood blossoms and branches.

Blossoming dogwood trees rank high on the list of signs that spring is really and truly here. Many of us in California head to the lower elevations of the western slope of the Sierra Nevada at about this time each year to see the new blooms emerge. They produce a surprisingly dense burst of white color in forests that are often relatively shady.

However, these are not that type of dogwood. If you are one of those California dogwood fans, you certainly noticed the pink fringes on these flowers. Our native Sierra dogwood is more of a pure white specimen, though it can have a bit of yellow or green — but it most certainly does not have the color these flowers possess. I photographed them in a formal garden in the San Francisco Bay Area.

A trail crosses springtime coastal bluffs to approach the rugged Big Sur coast south of Carmel, California.

This is a fairly “straight ahead” photograph of a popular section of the Big Sur coastline. There are several reasons for is popularity, not the least of which is the impressive number of sea stacks and the rocky junction of sea and land. It is also in the upper section of this area, not that far from locations like Carmel and Monterey. In addition, it provides fairly close access to the coast, including the trail crossing the bluff in the lower section of the photograph.

Most of the time I would hesitate to photograph a scene like this one, instead preferring something a bit more unusual — perhaps some dramatic light or maybe some fog. But it occurred to me that in many ways this scene on this spring day embodies the ideal of “normal” along this coast with the green hills, blue sky, and darker blue water. Oh, and about that trail… should you ever decide to try it or one like it, may I remind you that a lot of poison oak grows here?

Blue Dicks Flowers

The oddly-named blue dicks flowers, which one source claims derives from a shortening of the genus name Dichelostemma.

This poor plant and its striking flower are “blessed” with a name that never ceases to provoke a chuckle or two. I’ve often wondered how the plant got that common name, and when I did a little quick searching while working on this photograph I could find only one answer — and, frankly, I don’t find it all that compelling. As per the description above, the claim is that it derives from the “Dich” in Dichelostemma, the genus name of the plant. I can sort of see that, except… my minimal background in German makes me want to pronounce that differently. On top of that, the flower isn’t really blue!

Having said all of that, it is a beautiful and graceful flower that is common in my neck of the woods and, according to sources I consulted, throughout the “southwestern United States.” The individual flowers grow in a group at the end of a long, slender stem. The location where I most often photograph them features a lot of shady backgrounds and nearby lush greenery.

Colorful pieces of fabric photographed in a Southern California market.

This photograph comes from a visit to a collection of craft stores at a San Diego location a few years ago. We were there on a family visit, but I rarely go anywhere without carrying a camera, and it was impossible to resist stopping to photograph these beautiful and wildly colorful bits of fabric at one of the shops.

Here in California these images and these colors are a part of our culture. That, of course, should be no surprise at all in a state where it is hard to travel more than a few miles without passing through a town or a county with a Spanish-language name: San Francisco, Merced, Los Angeles, and… San Diego.
