Wetland Trees

I made this photograph on New Year’s Day, when we joined friends to photograph and celebrate the first day of 2024. Mostly we photographed birds, but the landscape was never far from our minds. This is a simple photograph of a non-epic scene, but I think that this image of wetland trees has a lot to say about this area and season.

Notice the autumnal colors? In California’s Central Valley, these colors continue right on into winter and even the beginning of the new year. I love the quality of light here, too. The atmosphere in the valley is often a combination of hazy and foggy, producing a soft glow. It also can warm the colors and soften the contrasts of these subjects, producing a kind of quiet beauty that you might not expect here.

During my November 1 fall color foray to Yosemite Valley, I ended up spending a lot of time photographing these black oaks. In addition to providing the expected fall color, smoke from a nearby managed fire drifted in and out, varying from quite thick to just enough to add some atmosphere. The haze made the light more visible, sometimes producing light beams among the silhouetted trees.

For this composition I decided to use the dark shapes of closer trees to frame more brightly lit trees out in the meadow. On a technical note, managing the extreme dynamic range between the highlights of backlit leaves and the deep shadows in the foreground and near the sides was a challenge. As always, the trick was to try to get enough shadow detail to work with in post while avoiding blown out highlights.

Seed Pods

This is a very subtle photograph, with a small range of tones and nothing that is quite pure white or even close to black. The early evening light was quite soft. I almost decided not to try to photograph this subject — the colors were so subtle, the light was low, and I was working handheld. But there I was, there the seed pods were, so I decided to give it a try.

The pods belong to some very tall wild grasses that grow along a trail that I frequently hike. Perhaps only weeks ago this would have been a very green subject, but here in California we move pretty quickly from the green of April to the brown, tan, and gold of the drier seasons of the year.
