One morning while visiting the Redwood National and State Parks in early June we headed away from the more heavily-visited areas on a hunch, and we ended up in a very quite place where no one else was around. It was an area full of tall trees, plentiful undergrowth, a few rhododendron flowers, and the deep quiet and stillness that characterizes such places. We lingered along a section of trail where there were lots of redwood forest undergrowth plants.

If you haven’t photographed deep in a redwood forest, you would probably be surprised by just how dark it can be, even in the daylight hours. When photographing there I often find myself caught between the need to get enough depth of field (small aperture) and keep a short enough shutter speed to stop the constant slight motion of the plants in subtle breezes. I end up raising ISO and, still, sometimes find myself with shutter speeds measured in seconds! This little grouping was entirely green, of course, but the taller plants were a bit lighter and stood out against the background bed of redwood sorrel.

I am not the main flower photographer in our family — that would be my wife Patricia Emerson Mitchell, whose primary focus is on photographing very small things, usually flowers and plants, and frequently in abstract ways. (We have a standing joke here about “our” macro lens… that I never get to use….) But still, I give it a try from time to time, and I enjoy seeing what I can do with this subject.

I recently accompanied her to a nearby formal garden where she often photographs. (It didn’t discourage me to know the they have a small cafe there, too. ;-) We went early in the morning on a non-busy weekday, thus avoiding the crowds and making it a bit easier to do photography without getting in the way. The gardeners (lots of them!) were there, too. One contingent was heading roses and clipping spent flowers and vegetation… and I found that the piles of discarded flora photographically interesting. That’s where I found these three flowers on a bed of clipped leaves in a wheelbarrow. (I think that the gardeners wondered about my sanity when they saw me photographing their garden trash!)

One white globe lily flower and several buds about to bloom.

Since a recent post regarding this same type of wildflower went into some detail about it, I’ll try to keep this post a bit shorter. (Note: I wrote “try,” not “promise.” ;-) This is a white globe lily flower, one of my favorites from a local spot that I’ve been visiting for decades, especially in spring, and to which I’ve returned again this spring.

The importance of these “local spots” cannot be over-emphasized. I’ve seen a lot of photographers get trapped by the “I only photograph amazing places” mantra. Some of them, whose naturally busy lives limit the frequency with which they can drop everything and head off to an exotic locale, become frustrated with their photography. I understand — it is important to “do photography” almost continuously in order to produce and maintain the instincts of seeing that are so important. But seeing can happen locally, too. In fact, practicing (a term I know from a life in music) as often as possible, even with subjects that might not be your first choice, is crucially important… and it can be done as close as your own back yard or in your neighborhood.

A dense stand of small, nearly leafless aspen trees with white trunks

This little grove of aspens and I have a long acquaintance. The grove isn’t anything that you would probably notice, even if you found it and pass right by. It is much like many thousands of other aspen groves in the Sierra Nevada… and many thousands more across the western US. But it is one of “my” groves, and I stop there pretty much every year at some point.

The trees in this spot are not terribly large, in fact they might seem larger in the photograph than they actually are. The grove is very close and dense, and if I step inside and try to walk around I have to duck and squeeze between trees. I usually prefer to photograph it up close, using a wide-angle lens, and from just beyond its edge, where the brighter light falls on the trunks. Ideally, as on this day, a bit of overcast reduces contrast a bit and fills in the shadows. it is always a challenge, though usually a pleasant one, to try to find workable compositions in the dense complexity of these groves. It often initially looks like the process should be obvious and easy, but once I start framing things up I invariably discover little “deal-breakers” in the composition — a dark branch, a distracting background, an unfortunate juxtaposition of branches. But eventually, with patience and persistence, things can fall together.
