I photographed this scene on my first visit to this location. Going to a new location for the first time can be a complex experience. There is, of course, the excitement of photographing something new. But there are other feelings, too — uncertainty about where to start, a bit of confusion and guesswork about how the light will evolve and about where to find the most interesting subjects. While sometimes the new simply seems exciting, other times it is almost overwhelming. For the most part I think I’ve learned to go with the flow, knowing that I’m going to make some wrong choices, that I’m acquiring knowledge that I can use when I come back, and that most likely I will at least come away with something interesting.

Approaching this spot, at first I wasn’t quite sure where to begin. I had an idea of how the light might evolve as the day ended, but when I arrived the light was less than spectacular. Another thing I have learned is that it is often better to just start making photographs rather than waiting for the perfect to reveal itself. Setting up, looking, and making exposures often primes the pump, and soon I start to see things more clearly. It is also good to be flexible and ready to be surprised. This photograph is built around one of those surprises. At first these patterns of windblown sand seemed uninteresting and I went on to photograph something else. But in the very last direct sun (you can see the edge of approaching shadows at lower left) the low light revealed shadows and textures that had been hidden earlier, and the color of the light became momentarily intense.

There is a story behind this enigmatic photograph. About 20 years ago (and I may not have the exactly right date above), three of us rode our bicycles about 1100 mile through a good section of Alaska as part of a group connected to our kids’ high school and middle school. The middle school science teacher (Hi, Mr. Hodges!) had run a hiking/biking club for many years, and every year the group mounted an expedition to some fascinating and historical place in the west. For the final trip before he retired, he outdid himself and organized this 1100 mile bicycle tour from Skagway, over White Pass, through part of BC and The Yukon, up to Fairbanks, and finally to Anchorage. It was the trip of a lifetime for many of these kids.

We did a short non-cycling layover in Fairbanks and took advantage of this to hire a school bus (!) to drive the group to the Arctic Circle. This is a bit of an odd trip — especially in a school bus — across miles and hours of gravel road through wilderness to arrive at… a wide spot in the road with a sign marking the approximate location of the Arctic Circle. It is some strange combination of astounding (nothing but incomprehensible wilderness between you and the Arctic Sea) and the banal — a road sign and this bit of a red rug with a dotted line that someone had thoughtfully placed to mark “the line.”

Sometimes (oh, heck, often) photographs come about in somewhat unsuspected ways, and this is such a photograph. In October we were in Southern Utah and we had previously spent a day photographing in Zion Canyon. The general plan on this day was to photograph along Mt. Carmel Highway in the morning (which we did), grab some coffee and food beyond the park, and then, well, we weren’t quite sure. The day evolved organically and we ended up on some interesting Utah backroads crossing some surprisingly snowy highland before we eventually ended up in Cedar City. We gassed up the vehicle and realized that we had time for a quick side trip into Kolob Canyon on our way back toward our eventual destination.

I’ve been in the less-visited and less-developed section of Zion National Park several times. In addition to being a jumping off point for lots of interesting trails, it presents some landscapes opportunities that are quite different from those of the more familiar Zion Canyon. I’ve usually been there earlier in the day, so it was fascinating to observe the place in late-day light. Much of this landscape is huge, even “epic” in scale, but as I scanned it I started to see smaller vignettes that seemed interesting. In particular, I noticed that this shadow was moving from left to right and gradually lighting the prominent tree in the center of the scene, casting its shadow on the brightly-lit sandstone behind it.

Last week I spend considerable time in San Francisco’s North Beach neighborhood. I’m a member of Studio Nocturne a group of night photographers (descended from “The Nocturnes”) who have been photographing and exhibiting together for decades. Every fall we do an “open studio” as part of The City’s Artspan Open Studio event. This year we were in the Live Worms Gallery on Grant in North Beach. We’ve been in various locations over the years, and I think this may have been one of the best spots we’ve used — lots of foot traffic, lots of places nearby to eat and drink, great atmosphere. (Terrible parking though!)

Each day I arrived an hour or so before we opened, and on the last day, Sunday, I headed a half block up Grant to this famous espresso shop. You might not know it if you just dropped in on a Sunday morning, like I did, but this is a somewhat historic location in San Francisco. In addition to being a meeting place for all sorts of interesting folks for years, it was the first espresso bar on the West Coast.
