Autumn Leaf Pile

I walk a lot. Most days I try for 4 or 5 miles, sometimes more. I always carry a camera — most often I don’t take it out of my small pack. But other times I spot something that interests me, and I’m glad I brought it a long. When I came across these intensely colorful autumn leaves on the ground beneath a copse of trees, I stopped and spent a few minutes photographing.

In my part of the San Francisco Bay Area, the autumn color season comes late, likely due to our gentle climate. We don’t see all that many autumn leaves here in October, and then things get started later in November. It seems that this year things are peaking right around the start of December. (I like to point out that I can make my “fall color season” go on for months, from the first hints of Sierra Nevada autumn color in September, to a few trees that still have leaves on New Year’s Day and beyond.)

Old Venice Buildings
“Old Venice Buildings” — Several old and worn buildings along Calle Fonte in Venice.

Venice is a very busy place, full of tourists, especially during the high season — as you know if you have ever been there in the summer. We were reminded of this when we visited a few years ago near the end of ten weeks of travel in Southern Europe. We managed to find accommodations away from the most crowded areas, but there is no escaping the crowds entirely. But it helps to wander into out-of-the-way spots like this one.

We went out for a long walk on our last day in Venice. We decided to cover a lot of ground and to visit some of the crowded areas that we had avoided. While walking one of those very busy streets, lined with stalls selling things to tourists, we noticed a very narrow passage leading off to the side. Taking it brought us to this spot and to the banks of the grand canal.

“River And Autumn Trees” — Autumn trees change colors along banks of the Merced River, Yosemite Valley.

While I wrote elsewhere that this end-of-October fall color visit to Yosemite focused on more intimate landscapes, this one might seem like an exception, given that the trees are across the river and there is a rather large cliff beyond. OK, it isn’t exactly “intimate by the usual standards…” but if you knew what I left out of this photograph you might forgive me! This is a spot in the Valley where you might typically photograph some of those larger, monumental subjects.

I had passed this spot without stopping earlier in the day, so when I came by again later on I was prepared to pause and photograph. This is a narrower section of the Valley, and those trees grow on the opposite bank of the Merced River. We see several of the sources of Yosemite autumn color here including the golden-brown black oak trees and the brilliant yellow big leaf maples.

Rectangular Patterns (Horizontal)
“Rectangular Patterns (Horizontal)” — Patterns formed by light, paint, shadows, and structure on an urban building.

This is one of a pair of photographs of the same structure. I’ll bet you might not be surprised to hear that the companion photograph is called “Rectangular Pattern (Vertical).” Working on this pair got me to thinking about a series that I might call “Urban Geometries” featuring such photographs, both from my existing archives and from some new work. You can look at this as a photograph of a real scene or, if you work at it, you may be able to see it as an abstract composition of forms and colors.

The location is an area that was acquired by a (very) big company for a huge future corporate campus. Then came the pandemic. Now their plans appear to be on hold, though they still hold rights to the properties. I suspect, but do not know for certain, that they did some “sprucing up” of the area to avoid charges that they are allowing it to degrade. Right now it is largely a sort of urban dead zone… though it has nice paint.
