Weathered windows below the eaves of a dilapidated yellow building at Mare Island Naval Ship Yard with star trails in the night sky.

This is another building that I have photographed a number of times when I’ve visited the Mare Island Naval Ship Yard to do night photography. Typically I have focused on the lower walls of the building, which are interesting due to the presence of garish yellow sodium vapor lighting, the interesting texture of corrugated metal walls with peeling paint, dilapidated and broken doors and windows, and the odd presence of a UFO-shaped shadow from a lamp hanging on the exterior. (A recent photo I posted featured that oddity.)

Here I wanted to shoot something a bit less complex and graphically simple – so I aimed the camera almost straight up from a position right in front of the building. Though they are difficult to see in this small jpg, the sky is filled with faint star trails from the two-minute exposure, and I like the way its inky blue-black color contrasts with the very warm colors of the yellow walls that are lit by sodium vapor light coming from multiple directions. The terribly weathered window frame, the bit of conduit attached to the wall, and the broken window panes break up the wall.

Worn Windows and Shadows

Afternoon shadows fall across worn street-side windows in San Francisco, California.

This sort of window along the sidewalk is common in urban areas like San Francisco, where the occupants of the building want some sunlit but don’t want people walking by on the sidewalk a few feet away staring in at them. (The light glowing behind the glass in the upper left suggests that someone is inside.) I was interested in how worn and grungy the glass has become – it begins with several types of obscured glass, in some of the panes the reinforcing wire is very apparent. They it looks like layers of paint may have been added and partially removed at various times – perhaps the windows were painted out? Perhaps grafitti was partially removed? And more recently someone has added various small paper stickers.

Windows and Shadows, Building 101

Windows and Shadows, Building 101

Night black and white photograph of windows, corrugated metal, and shadows on the front of Building 101, Mare Island Naval Shipyard, Vallejo, California.

This photograph shows details of the facade of Building 101 at the historic Mare Island Naval Ship Yard near Vallejo, California – mainly the large window at the lower left of the front of the building, but also including some shadows cast by various items attached to the building an nearby that caught the light from nearby security lights.

After looking at the gaudy coloration from the artificial lighting on this building I thought it might be interesting – or a relief! – to try a black and white version of the close-up view.
