East Side Morning

East Side Morning
“East Side Morning” — Early morning light on the eastern escarpment of the Sierra Nevada near Parker Pass.

There are few sights more beautiful and spectacular than a shoulder-season sunrise on the eastern escarpment of the Sierra Nevada. Believe me, it is well worth getting up long before sunrise and putting on all of your warm clothes! Many of the best views on these mornings are from a distance away from the base of the mountains, where you have a clear view that stretches from the high desert at the base of the range right on up to rugged, snow-covered summits.

While my main goal for heading out there in late September and early October is to photograph the changing fall colors, the light and atmosphere change, too as summer fades and autumn arrives. When I went there on this visit I had just returned from two-and-a-half months of overseas travel, and I was missing “my Sierra!” I headed into the high country to set up camp, and from there I wandered on foot and by vehicle — and on this morning my wandering took me out into the high desert east of the range before dawn.

Gully, Morning Light

Gully, Morning Light
“Gully, Morning Light” — A gully with a dusting of autumn snow is reddish in early morning light, Eastern Sierra Nevada.

While camped in the Sierra near the eastern border of Yosemite National Park during the early fall season, I decided to head down to Lee Vining and then turn south. My plan was to do some early morning photography along the base of the Sierra where the mountains begin to rise toward the crest and the boundary of the park. I made this photograph shortly after sunrise as the morning light worked its way down the escarpment.

The intense coloration of the rocky face is from a combination of warm colored rocks and very warm colored morning light. With the exception of a permanent snow field near the top edge, the rest of the white stuff in the photograph came from an early storm that had passed through the area the day before, leaving the sort of dusting that reminds us that winter is coming.

A colorful grove of mixed trees in the high desert below the eastern escarpment of the Sierra Nevada.

As the Eastern Sierra aspen color season progressed during October, the colors (to speak generally) work their way down from the highest groves to trees in the high desert, where they may appear alongside cottonwood trees, which themselves produce color even later in the season. On this morning I had finished photographing my sunrise location, but I didn’t want to stop just yet. So I decided to stretch the photography time as far into the later morning hours as possible and to do a bit of exploring at the same time. And this brought me back to this familiar grove in the high desert.

A week earlier these trees were all still almost uniformly green. But now, only days later, the grove was quickly transitioning to bright autumn colors. One of the characteristic parts of experiencing this part of the Eastern Sierra is the meeting of high desert and alpine mountains. So here I decided to juxtapose the two — the foreground trees and sagebrush country, and beyond that high peaks bearing snow, some from last year and some from this year’s early season storms.

A view of Mono Lake, Mono Basin, and surrounding peaks from the base of the Sierra Nevada.

This photograph is another long view of Mono Basin and Mono Lake, with Paoha Island centered in the frame. Paoha Island is, like its companion Negit Island, the product of volcanic activity where a long string of volcanic sites intersects the lake. You can find lots of other volcanic cones on this like both north and south of Mono, including the much taller and older Mono Craters just to the south.

When I first came to Mono Lake and photographed it many years ago, I typically tried to get very close to the edge of the lake, for example photographing tufa formations along its edge. But over the years I’ve become more fascinated by the longer views that take in the vast space in and above the Mono Basin. To really see this it helps to find an elevated location, and there are plenty of them to see if you poke around a bit in and around the Basin. This photograph was made near the base of the eastern escarpment of the Sierra Nevada, and it looks across the lake and beyond to eastern mountains that belong to Nevada’s basin and range terrain.
