A purple trillium flower grows beneath the redwoods at Muir Woods National Monument, California.

Among the many trillium plants coming up at Muir Woods National Monument on the first weekend of the month were some with these purple blossoms. I’ve seen the plants before, but by some strange coincidence I had never quite managed to be there to see the blooms. If you are in the SF Bay area… go now!

Copy of the text posted with the color version of this photograph: “This weekend I visited Muir Woods again – I’m working on building a varied set of photographs from this park. While the previous weekend was more of a typical winter day with overcast and drizzle, this weekend was the first with fair weather after several weeks of rain. Plants and flowers were coming up everywhere and water was flowing everywhere. Among the new flowers were many, many trillium plants, and many were already in bloom.”

Oregon Oxalis (or Redwood Sorrell) plants in the soft light of a redwood grove at Muir Woods National Monument, California.

In many places this intriguing plant covers the forest floor in the heart of Muir Woods National Monument. I’ve always just thought of it as “clover,” but I had this nagging suspicion that it might have a different name. It turns out that it is oxalis oregana, also known as oregon oxalis or redwood sorrell. This patch was located in a rather dark area beneath some large trees, and the water drops were left over from earlier rain. In my mind, this small but lush plant, carpeting the forest floor, represents the rich character of the undergrowth of the redwood forest.
