Autumn Weeds

Colorful autumn weeds with morning frost, Central Valley.

Yes, weeds. I had spent a few hours photographing more exalted subjects — migratory birds, foggy sunrise skies, big vistas, fall colors. Eventually it was time for a break, so I pulled into a parking area, poured a cup of coffee from my thermos and grabbed a snack. It was a very cold morning, so I stood along the sunny side of my vehicle, enjoying the slight warmth of the morning sun. And at my feet, right there in the parking lot, next to a fence, I saw some colorful, frost-rimmed… weeds.

As you would expect, I put down the coffee, grabbed a camera, and set about photographing the… weeds. I’m often reminded of something that another photographer once wrote: “There’s always something to see!” Those words, which seem pretty banal when considered from a non-photographic perspective, turn out to be pretty important. No matter where you are, there is, indeed, virtually always “something to see.”

Plants, Canyon Light

A beam of light catches plants growing on the shadowed walls of a Utah slot canyon.

While much of the time canyon light seems soft, suffused, and stable, there are edge conditions in which the light changes very quickly — appearing suddenly and lasting only minutes or seconds. This is especially true with direct light since the edges of the light are often scores or hundreds of feet above, and shadows from such things can traverse the deep canyon landscape with astonishing speed.

This photograph was made in such a place and in such conditions. The canyon walls were nearly parallel to the angle of the sun, and the beam of light came down from above only inches from the surface of the canyon wall. While the rock remains in shadow, this light manages to stoke the tree bits of vegetation in the scene.

Plants grow in cracks in a sandstone cliff, Zion Naitonal Park.

One unanticipated result of the pandemic restrictions on travel has been that I’ve had plenty of time to start digging through my archive of photographs made over the years. In some cases I have “discovered” photograph files that I had originally left behind, either because I didn’t understand how the image could work at that time or because I simply got distracted by other things and moved on. In addition to finding these “lost files,” the process of revisiting old work has caused me to rethink my original presentation of some photographs that I thought I was done with. This is one of those photographs.

The subject is in Zion National Park, where it is easy to find all sorts of interesting things along the red rock canyon walls. As I looked at my first take on this photograph, done eight years ago, I felt that I wanted to interpret it a bit differently. This version is cropped a bit more tightly, and I’ve handled the dynamic range of the scene a bit differently, perhaps retaining a bit more of the feeling subjects shaded by tall cliffs.

Fairy Lantern, Spring Greenery

A fairy lantern blossom among spring greens in the hills of the San Francisco Bay Area.

This is not a fairy lantern blossom from the spring 2020 season. It is not news to anyone at this point, but my ability to get into the field was interrupted by stay-at-home orders more or less at the peak of the local wildflower season. Fortunately, I did get out a few times before the world came crashing down. And, truth be told, I have a lot of unfinished photographs sitting in the raw file archive from which this one comes.

While I know that this lovely flower can be found in quite a few places, I almost go back to the same specific location. It is along a trail in a local country park that drops down into a small canyon cut by a seasonal stream. The sides of the canyon are steep, and there is plenty of overhanging foliage, and on the right spring day the whole place is quiet and full of green.
