Oban Harbor, Dusk

Oban Harbor, Dusk
“Oban Harbor, Dusk” — Dusk sky, smooth waters, and evening lights along the edge of Oban harbor, Scotland.

This might have been the actual moment when we truly entered vacation mode — which is a different thing than travel mode. Travel mode had brought us to Oban, Scotland, where we paused for a couple of days between arriving in the UK and starting our walk on the Great Glen Way. Travel mode meant almost a full day in international transit, a quick overnight a the Glasgow airport, a shuttle ride to the train station, arrival and check-in in Oban, and then a search for dinner. We finished dinner, left the restaurant for our walk back to our accommodations, and were greeted with the lovely, peaceful scene of smooth water and the dusk glow in the sky.

Oban is a fine little town, located right on the water and a center for fishing, water adventures, ferries, and more. We enjoyed out short stay there — and our visit to the Oban distillery and a bit of whisky tasting probably enhanced things — as we devoted a couple of days to just slowing down and starting to overcoming jet lag.

There is a phenomenal range of photographic subjects in New York City: the natural scenes in Central Park, street life, and architecture old and new. For reasons relating to the season, our location in Manhattan, and more I ended up making quite a few “natural landscape” images in Central Park. But we did spend time elsewhere, too, including on a long walk that took us through the Hudson Yards development. My feelings about the place are complicated, for reasons I won’t go into here, but it does present some interesting architectural forms, including these buildings with reflecting glass surfaces.

I went with black and white in this rendition since I was more interested in the shapes and lines than in presenting of the supposed reality of the place. (The underlying image is full of blue tones and has much less contrast.) I’ve long been fascinated by how malleable monochrome images are in post — we can push and pull them in all sorts of ways that would be far too extreme in most cases with color.

Subalpine Lake and Forest

Forest borders aYosemite National Park back-country lake.

Technically this little lake is in the Yosemite National Park “backcountry…” but just barely. It is, as far as I know, the the closest spot to roads where you may backpack in the park and camp overnight. It is a bit of a special place for our family. I took each of our three children on their first backpack trips when they were three-years-old, and this was always the destination. The first two went with just me, but when it was time for our third to go he was accompanied by the whole family.

This past week I found myself between photography locations one afternoon, and on a whim I decided to hike up there again. It may have been the first time I decades. As I hiked the very short trail I thought back to those early trips. On the first one our oldest son took four hours to hike the 1. 2 miles. But I’m sure he looked at every rock, tree, and bug along the way. In some ways out daughter — the second to take the trip — may have been the most natural back county traveler as a child. (On one later trip she memorably sang most of the way up a nearly 8 mile hike.) The third trip was extra special, since the entire family went along and squeezed into a giant five-person backpacking tent, seeking protection from a thunder and lightning storm we still talk about. (“Make it stop, Daddy!” Though Patty remembers it as, “Make it stop, Mommy!”))

The banks of the Arno River and the tower of the Basilica of Santa Croce in the evening, Florence.

I made this photograph as we were walking back into town after joining the throngs for sunset at the Piazzale Michelango above Florence. We weren’t sure what to expect at that spot, but what a surprise! There were thousands of people up there, staying along the ramparts, sitting on the stairways, drinking wine, listening to music… all because of the view toward the western horizon over Florence and the Arno River. You might think, “tourist event,” but if you visit Florence you should go!

After sunset the party diminished (a little bit) and we headed back down the hill toward Florence and dinner. As we crossed one of the bridges over the river, Patty pointed out the reflections of the lights in the water, and this photograph is the result.
