River of Aspen Color

River of Aspen Color
“River of Aspen Color” — A band of colorful autumn aspen trees follows a gully down a Sierra Nevada slope.

The grove in this photograph is semi-famous. The earliest photograph of it that I’m aware of is by Galen Rowell, and just about everyone who photographs Sierra aspens has given it a shot. Timing is everything — along with a bit of weather luck — and I arrived a bit after the peak of color. (At that point there might not be any bare trunks, but some of the foreground trees would still show a bit of green.) Rather than showing the whole thing, I decided to crop a bit and let the green area at upper right intrude into the space where yellow turns to orange.

While timing is a key to getting aspen photographs, the window is often a bit wider than you may expect. We want to arrive at the perfect moment of maximum color before leaves really start to drop. But the color transition is quite photogenic both before an d after that brief moment. Before the peak a few green trees might be part of the scene, and a bit later scattered colorful leaves might poignantly interrupt a forest of nearly bare white trunks.

Forest, White Drin River

Forest, Whie Drin River
“Forest, White Drin River” — A person stands next to the White Drin River under a forest canopy, Kosovo.

The White Drin is a branch of the Drin River that drains Kosovo and parts of Albania — this portion begins in the mountains along the western side of Kosovo. Some regard a waterfall a bit further up the river from here as its source. This scene is along the popular walking route to that fall.

While many of my landscape photographs exclude people, it seems appropriate to include one (and more, if you look closely) here. This location, not far from the town of Peja (or Pec) is extremely popular. The place was crowded when we visited, with families walking the route and in places trailside vendors.

Meadow and Mountains

Meadow and Mountains
“Meadow and Mountains” — Morning haze and wildfire smoke on Mounts Dana and Gibbs above a late-summer Yosemite high country meadow.

In some places the Sierra Nevada crest can present the classic, rugged alpine scene — high, rocky peaks and ridges that almost appear to be inaccessible. But in other places the land rises a bit more gently, and you can look across open meadows and forests towards peaks that look as if you could just walk to their summits. (In fact, you could walk to the summits in this photograph, but you’d be exhausted, as the highest is over 13,000′ tall.

The water in the foreground belongs to the Dana Fork of the Tuolumne River. Early in the season the meadow here can be lushly green — and quite wet — but by the end of summer, like almost all Sierra meadows, it turns golden. On this day the atmosphere was complex — high clouds would lead to thunderstorms later on, and drifting wildfire smoke obscured distant subjects.

Douro River at Pinhão

Douro River at Pinhão
“Douro River at Pinhão” — The Douro river bends past the town of Pinhão, with hillsides covered by vineyards.

I am going to use this post to give a shout-out to Portugal Green Walks, the company we used to organize our May walk in the Douro Valley hills. (I have no financial relationship with the company — just a pleased customer.) We spent a week in this region, walking on six days between cities in a loop that started and ended in Pinhão, the small town along the river bank near the lower edge of the photo. They could not have come up with a better conclusion to the walk. On the second-to-last day we rounded a hill and soon came upon this spectacular view of the Douro River and Valley.

A few minutes later we arrived at our lodgings, checked in, and walked out onto their terrace overlooking this view, where we enjoyed almonds from their orchard and a glass of wine. We truly felt that we had arrived as we sat and took in this remarkable scene. We were not quite finished yet — the next morning we had a short, easy downhill walk to Pinhão, where we began our trip back to Porto.
