La Despensa de Palacio

La Despensa de Palacio
“La Despensa de Palacio” — “La Despensa de Palacio” cafes y chocolates shop, Sevilla.

This subject came from another Sevilla “random walk” that took us out of the historic center near the huge cathedral, through narrow and curving streets, and eventually to areas where the locals seem to hang out and there were far fewer tourists like us. (We ended up in the area with the large installation that I understand some refer to as the mushroom — an immense overhead wooden structure.)

Finishing our walk at this point, it seemed like time to head back towards where we started… and, of course, to look for dinner. As we walked again through these narrow streets, the lower angle of the sun cast the streets and facing businesses into shadow. Many were closed by now, including this shop with its hand painted roll-up door.

Market, Arezzo

As I have mentioned in posts accompanying previous photographs from this town, Arezzo is one of the “off the beaten tracks” Italian towns we visited during summer 2023. I don’t mean to say that it is an uninteresting or unimportant place — just that it isn’t a typical tourist destination. That was clear during our visit, when we often felt like we might be the only tourists in a restaurant or other venue.

The photograph features a look through the doorway of a small store where locals shop. The cases feature a remarkable assortments of cheeses, beans, pastas, wine, and more. On our walks through this town we were more likely to encounter such places or other local businesses and less likely to see the usual tourist shops.

It isn’t that we have no shops like this in the US — it is that they are so rare. But in Siena (and in many other places we visited) they are everywhere. Yes, this is a “tourist town,” but still — how many tourists are buying lots of cured meats? (Hint: they are a problem with carry-on airline luggage.) Everything about the front of this shop is a bit… unusual. The lovely little pink pig, the real pig head attached to the wall just left of center, the strange red curtain.

No, we did not go into this shop — even though it was on my agenda for this trip after I had seen and photographed it when we visited something like seven years ago. It is funny how inaccurate memory can be — I thought it was on an entirely different street in Siena.

Perhaps there was once pizza at Pizza Jack’s No. 2, but it looks like those days are gone. Though the string of holiday lights along the roof seems sort of festive — perhaps left over from a previous year? The building is in an “interesting” area of town, one that exists between better neighborhoods in one direction and lots of urban redevelopment in the other. This area is one with a lot of potential, but also a lot of abandoned and run-down stuff that probably won’t be here much longer.

This may end up being an unusual example of a photograph that I’ll release in both color and monochrome versions. For obvious reasons, I was thinking “color!” when I made the photograph, but in post it became clear that it also works in monochrome, though with a rather different effect. There’s an old adage about going to black and white in photographs where the color doesn’t tell the story. Here, color does tell at least one important story, but darned if it doesn’t work without the color, too.
