Light from the morning sun slants across the face of sand dunes to illuminate desert plants.

During times of what I consider to be the most interesting light in the dunes — right around sunrise and sunset — the scene changes with remarkable speed. These landscapes are so much about the color and angles of the light, and at these times both of those elements can change with great speed. One moment a subject might be dull and flat, but a moment later as a beam of light comes over a dune it may be spotlighted against shadows or its color may change drastically. I’m always surprised by how dynamic the photography process is in this supposedly static landscape!

I had earlier noticed this creosote bush and its small companion, but passed them by since they were in flat shadows. I turned my attention to something else further away, and when I looked at the nearer landscape a few minutes later I saw that the plants were in the sun and the light was touching the top of the dune in the upper part of the frame. I quickly turned my attention to this intimate landscape, and changed continuously as I made several exposures over what must have been no more than a minute or two.

The first morning light on a ridge in desert mountains, Death Valley National Park.

One important factor to keep in mind when photographing in Death Valley National Park is the roughly north-south orientation of most of the valleys and mountain ranges. In a broad sense, this tends to give us two ways to photograph these subjects in the morning or evening — one in direct sun and the other in shadow and backlight. This is such a basic aspect of the park’s geography, that I often organize my daily photography around it. (There are some variations on this theme, for example in locations where some features face more towards the north or south, and interesting light often slants across them.)

This photograph takes in a small segment of the east face of the Panamint Mountains, the gigantic range separating Death Valley from the Panamint Valley to the west. This east-facing aspect of the range rises over 11,000′ from Badwater to the summit of Telescope Peak, and most of it has a remarkably rugged and barren appearance. Because it is so tall, the “sunrise” takes place over a longer time as the light works its way down from the highest peaks and ridges to the alluvial fans at their base and eventually to Death Valley itself.

If you have been following along recently, you may recall me writing that this rocky ridge would show up a few more times in the photographs from my recent Death Valley visit. Although I never actually went to that ridge, it was off to the side as I walked to and from another subject on one evening and the following morning. The ridge runs a bit further to the right before ending with a spur that extends slightly into the broad, flat desert valley beyond.

Late in the day the surface of this ridge takes on the warm tones of sunset light, and the color of the ridge is quite different. Some red tones in the rock combine with the reddish light to produce a very colorful appearance. But this photograph was made the next morning, when the light comes from the other direction, leaving that same face in the cool-toned shadows. I made the photograph as the sun was gaining enough elevation to shine over the top of the ridge, striking the sand dunes that are near its base.

Given the opportunity, I like to visit Death Valley twice each year — once during winter and again around the start of spring. While the spring visit brings the hope of seeing a brief wildflower bloom, winter is less crowded (and, yes, it can be crowded in this park) and feels more elemental. I’m just back from the winter visit, and I had the chance to both revisit some familiar places and push out the boundaries a bit by visiting locations that were new to me.

I was in a fairly remote part of the park on this morning, awake early to walk a mile or so to my intended subject. Due to the sun direction and geography, I didn’t need to start out in complete darkness… which inevitably meant that I was distracted by the landscape as I walked toward my primary goal. The sand-covered hills in this photograph are located at the end of a much taller ridge, and their extension into the large valley beyond places the tallest peaks in the early morning sunlight. More desert mountains rise in the distance beyond the wide valley.
