A postcard from Pandemia, photographed on a neighborhood walk last month that took me past a school that should have been in session, crowded with students, and likely with cares everywhere. It was empty, with no sign of students, teachers, parents, or anyone else. The piles of dead leaves along the edges of parking areas accentuated the feeling that the place had been abandoned.

This row of bright orange pylons stood along a curb with nothing to do, just hanging out and waiting to see if anyone showed up. They seemed happy to see me.

Oddly, so many photographs seem to have a different and unexpected context in this time of social distancing and relative confinement to our homes and neighborhoods. Some photographers are moving to photographs of things in or around their homes. (I’ve done a bit of that, too.) Some are reaching back into their image archives to discover photographs that they/we had left behind. And a few are ignoring the guidelines and heading out into the field… or else taking advantage of the loosening of restrictions as the new announcements come out. (I’m hoping for a bit of that soon, too!)

Although the evening of this photograph was eight years ago, I recall it fairly well. I had been photographing somewhere else north of the Golden Gate. I started back home in the late afternoon, pausing in this area before crossing the bridge to San Francisco — the timing was fortuitously right to be here at sunset. It was an evening of beautiful sky, with bands of clouds stretching to the horizon as a ship and barge headed out into the ocean.

A wild sunflower bloom in the hills of the San Francisco Bay Area.

Most of the wildflowers that I find and photograph in the San Francisco Bay Area are relatively small. They may spring up in large, meadow-filling numbers, but the individual blossoms are rarely much more than an Ince across, and many are quite a bit smaller. This flower is an obvious exception, being several inches across — and, as such, it stands out from its surroundings when I find one.

I’m pretty sure this is the flower of the plant I know as mule ears — named, it seems, after the big floppy leaves of the plant. It is also a sunflower, at least according to a few references I found. When I encounter this spring flower around here it is often found alone, and it often is not exactly a pretty plant. Despite the striking size and color of the flower, the blooms are often worn and deformed — so I was pleased to find this relatively perfect specimen on a hike earlier this spring.

Evening light on the Mustard Canyon area in Death Valley National Park.

This is a place that I photograph from time to time. It isn’t far from spots where I camp, so it isn’t unusual to pass by as I head out or return from some more distant location. A few years ago I stopped and climbed a low hill there late in the day, found it magical, and the hill — which might seem like nothing special to others — is one of my little personal spots in Death Valley. From here the panorama is expansive in all directions, and the slight elevation of the place lets me see even farther.

The view here begins in the foreground with the Mustard Canyon area. The mustard part of the name makes sense — in the ideal light the formations are strikingly yellow. The canyon part seems a bit of a stretch. I’m sure that there is a route followed by water heading out into the valley, but it seems more like a wash than a canyon. The rugged foreground, filled with alternating yellow and reddish material, eventually gives way to giant alluvial fans, and in the far distance the terrain rises to the Amargosa Mountains.
