Morning, St. Mark's Square
“Morning, St. Mark’s Square” — A few people and many pigeons, early morning at St. Mark’s Square, Venice

St. Mark’s Square can be one of the most crowded places in Venice. The square itself is one of the best known landmarks, and others (like the eponymous cathedral) are nearby, along with the famous columns and the waterfront. If you are looking to avoid the crowds, this is not one of the places you most likely go!

However, on this morning I was out on the streets very early with my camera. I began a bit before sunrise, actually. Not only were there far fewer people, but the early morning air was comfortably cool. It felt like a very different Venice as a few people walked past and flocks of pigeons collected in the square.

Shoreline, Pond, and Mountains

“Shoreline, Pond, and Mountains” — Early evening sun lingers on the shoreline of a small pond beneath the Sierra Nevada crest.

This pond was a frequent subject when I camped nearby on a mid-July backpacking trip into the Sierra Nevada. We camped just below the crest of the range east of Yosemite National Park. This valley holds numerous lakes, and we camped at one of the larger ones. The pond shown in the photo was nearby — less than a one minute walk from my campsite.

I photographed this subject both early and late in the day, the times when the light is more agreeable. This photo comes from early on my evening photography outing, when the shadows were just beginning to lengthen and stretch across the landscape.

Dawn Fog and Wildfire Smoke
“Dawn Fog and Wildfire Smoke” — Fog hovers over a meadow, wildfire smoke fills the sky as trees are silhouetted by first dawn light above the Sierra Nevada crest.

In the mountains I usually awaken while it. is still dark outside, and on my most recent visit I was camped in a forest. So I have virtually no idea of the specific conditions I will find when I head out. Will there be clouds? Frost? haze? I won’t know until I get to a location and the light begins to appear. I can anticipate the range of possibilities to some extent ,but occasionally I am completely surprised. That was the case on this morning when I emerged from the forest campground, arrived at a meadow, and found it filling with beautiful ground fog.

Such conditions often are very transitory — all it takes is a little breeze or a slight increase in the temperature and fog is gone. So I quickly headed to a spot I know of where I thought some trees might be silhouetted against the pre-sunrise sky and fog. It was my lucky morning… the fog continued to thicken and spread for a while, and I managed to make this photograph of those trees and a distant Sierra crest peak as the fog drifted my way.

Rio Dei Greci, Venice
“Rio Dei Greci, Venice” — Motor boats on the Rio dei Greci canal, and the Campanile Bell Tower of San Gregorio dei Greci, Venice.

If memory serves (and if I’m interpreting the order of images in my files correctly) I made this photograph after we returned from a short visit to Murano, the Venice island famous for its glass work. I would have been standing on a bridge ( Ponte San Lorenzo) and looking along the canal toward the open water and Murano. The tower is the Campanile Bell Tower of San Gregorio dei Greci. (Hint: The famous one in Pisa is not Italy’s only leaning tower!)

This is another photograph from a recent return to the photo archives from our 2022 visit to Venice and other places in Southern Europe. Going back over these older files is partly fun — it rekindles a lot of memories. But it is also practical. I inevitably “discover” photographs that I left behind when I reviewed them immediately following the trip.
