A group of “dancing” sandhill cranes in early morning light.

This photograph is a companion to another that I shared a couple of weeks ago of this same group. It was early on a morning of thin fog, and the first direct sunlight had not yet arrived. As I worked my way slowly along a levee the view of this group of cranes appeared as I passed by some tall reeds. I stopped to watch and photograph. Mostly the birds were quiet, but before long they became more active, eventually taking off and flying away.

For a few minutes before their departure they engaged enthusiastically in the ritual “crane dance.” A group of cranes will assemble and the rise briefly into the air with a flapping of wings and a little hop, and just as quickly land again. Several birds in the group were alternately bending their heads down low, as the crane at the right, and jumping up wards. A few moments later the group took to the air and departed.

A crowd assembled to watch a performance by Sleeveless the Magician at San Diego’s Balboa Park.

This photograph comes from a visit to San Diego a few years ago. We ended up spending a good part of a day wandering around the city’s big Balboa Park along with huge crowds of other people enjoying the early spring Southern California sunshine. I recall that on this day I had left my big camera behind and instead was traveling light, using a very small camera and a couple of little primes, and having fun shooting street photographer style.

A big crowd had assembled along a wide passageway where a street magician was performing, doing tricks that seemed largely designed to appeal to children. I stood at the back of the crowd and made a few photographs. Rediscovering this photograph recently reminded me how much I miss the experience of being in huge, busy crowds in places like this. Yes, I like being alone in quiet places, but I miss busy parks, crowded restaurants, concerts, even airline travel. I’m looking forward to seeing life return to something resembling normal in 2021.

This photograph follows one that I shared a few days ago. In that photo a group of sandhill cranes was standing in and along the edge of a pond, and I mentioned that their upright positions suggested that they were preparing to take to the air and depart. I wrote that without looking at the files that followed. Now I have looked at those other files, and I realize that I was correct — the small flock rose into the air almost immediately after that photograph and then traversed across the scene from left to right. I made this photograph as they departed.

You may notice that there is a lot of motion blur in this photograph. We often try to capture sharp photographs of birds, including those in flight, by hoping for sufficient light and then learning to track them as they fly. That’s not always an easy thing to do, and there’s nothing wrong with a sharp photograph of birds! But sometimes I feel that including some blur may better express the motion of this subject and the speed and suddenness of the birds’ flight.

This image comes from 2013, and was made in a sort of off-hand manner on a family visit to San Diego. (Off the top of my head, I can’t actually recall exactly where I photographed it, though it may have been at Balboa Park.) Indeed, it is another photograph that emerges from my pandemic review of my archives of old raw files.

Photographs like this one are both fun and challenging, at least in my experience. Like many photographers, I’m intrigued by forms, shapes, curves as abstract things, and they often underly photographs that seem to be about more obvious content. The opportunity to work with subjects where these elements of shape are almost the entirely of the image is hard to resist. It also almost always (again in my personal experience) turns out to be harder than I think it will be. More often than not, when I first see such a subject I am certain that it will work… but as I begin to actually make the image small things interfere with what I’m looking for. In this case, I do like the result, and I enjoy trying to see the pattern of the bright leaf edges as their own abstract form.
