Rio Dei Greci, Venice

If memory serves (and if I’m interpreting the order of images in my files correctly) I made this photograph after we returned from a short visit to Murano, the Venice island famous for its glass work. I would have been standing on a bridge ( Ponte San Lorenzo) and looking along the canal toward the open water and Murano. The tower is the Campanile Bell Tower of San Gregorio dei Greci. (Hint: The famous one in Pisa is not Italy’s only leaning tower!)

This is another photograph from a recent return to the photo archives from our 2022 visit to Venice and other places in Southern Europe. Going back over these older files is partly fun — it rekindles a lot of memories. But it is also practical. I inevitably “discover” photographs that I left behind when I reviewed them immediately following the trip.

Trees, Boulders, and Dawn Fog

Late in the first half of September I spent a few days camping and photographing in the Yosemite high country. The weather was a bit challenging — cold, cloudy, and with rain at times. But those conditions are often more photographically interesting than typical summer blue sky days. I was up before dawn on this morning, and I was thrilled to discover thick fog blanketing frosty meadows.

My favorite Sierra Nevada season begins in September and can extend into the beginning of November. The pleasant, easy-going summer conditions begin to fade as the days get shorter, vegetation dries out, crowds disappear, weather fronts approach more often, and fall colors arrive.

“Rectangular Patterns (Vertical)” — Patterns formed by light, paint, shadows, and structure on an urban building.

This is the second in a series of three photographs that I made on a walk that took me through an area of urban renewal in my town. A large corporation committed to very extensive building plans, then backed off during the pandemic, and now seems to be trying to, in my view, make it look like something is happening when not much really is. They have painted buildings and put up interesting interpretive signs. To their credit, this is better than just letting the properties decay.

I’m very attracted to strong graphic forms and colors — which I suppose might surprise some who think of me as “just” a landscape photographer. But I don’t see any conflict, and I feel that the interest in such forms underlies quite a few of my landscape images, even though it is possible to look at them primarily as being “pictures of nature.”

Lakes Meadows, and Trees
“Lakes Meadows, and Trees” — Trees and shorelines along a series of Sierra Nevada lakes.

This is another photograph from my mid-July backpack trip into the Eastern Sierra Nevada, right below the crest of the range just outside Yosemite National Park. We spent three nights and four days in the area, and because it was an easy trip with low mileage, I had plenty of time to photograph morning and evening. This is an early morning photograph of a series of lakes, captured while my trail companions were still in their tents.

The area presented some unusual terrain. Our trip began at the lower end of the lake that is barely visible in the far distance, so the first few miles of walking were nearly level. From the end of that lake we climbed no more than perhaps fifty more feet to the middle lake and our campsite. Talk about easy walking! The water in the foreground belongs to a small pond that was less than a one minute walk from my campsite.
