The journey from yesterday’s “photograph of the day” (birds in the predawn light above Central California wetlands) to today’s photograph may rightly be regarded as an example of moving from the sublime to the ridiculous. But I think that the ridiculous is also frequently worthy of a photograph — though it may not be worth quite as many descriptive words.

We were out walking in downtown San Francisco, and I was in street photographer mode. I’ve actually photographed things in front of this shop — a liquor store — in the past, so I think that slightly off-kilter advertising is part of their plan. It may be difficult to see in this small on-screen jpg image, but there are some interesting and slightly odd things inside the store window, too.

Update: A Note About Comments At My Website

By default, visitors to my website are able to comment on posts and articles, and I welcome your comments and questions.

However, earlier this week a reader noted that comments had been turned off on an article he wanted to comment on. That surprised me, but when I looked more closely I discovered that an automatic setting was closing comments a few weeks after posting.

That isn’t what I intended… and I think I have now fixed the problem re-enabled your ability to leave questions and comments.

Birds Before Dawn

A flock of small birds rises into pre-dawn sky about San Joaquin Valley wetlands

This was a long day with lots of driving. In the evening I would be in Oakhurst, in the Sierra Nevada foothills near Yosemite, where I planned to attend the reception for “AVIAN: Birds In A Changing Landscape,” an exhibit of art related to the lives of birds in California. (Two of my photographs are in the show, and it runs through January 14 at Gallery Five.) But before going to Oakhurst I figured I would start my day by visiting the San Joaquin Valley wetlands, the environment where the birds actually live.

After a two-hour drive I arrived a half hour or so before dawn. I grabbed a quick cup of coffee from my thermos, put the big lens on my camera, and turned my attention to the surrounding bird-filled landscape. Within moments I was stunned to see something new to me — an absolutely huge flock of very small birds rose in the distance. My best guess is that they may have been tai-color blackbirds, but the numbers were far beyond anything I had seen here before. The light was too low and they were too far away to make an effective photograph, but before long a very small fraction of the flock came across this section of the wetlands closer to my location, and I was able to photograph them against the pre-dawn sky.

Preparing to Open

Morning on a San Francisco street, as a man prepares a store for opening

This is another in my small series of photographs made on a recent two-day visit to San Francisco. Since we were there primarily to attend a couple of event musical performances, we had time during the day to combine general laziness with street photography and walks in the area. We weren’t up exactly at the crack of dawn — and then there was breakfast — but we were up and out on the street before things became very crowded.

From where we stayed, the walk down toward the Hayes Valley area near the opera house and symphony hall gradually evolved from a mostly urban residential to a mostly commercial area of shops and restaurants. This market was roughly at the midway point, where there were still residences (of the old style rather than newer condos) but there were also a few businesses, including this corner market, outside of which an employee was doing a quick clean up before, I presume, opening up for the day.
