Returning to the San Francisco Bay Area from a week in the Seattle area back in August, we decided to take the long way back and turn a two-day trip into a four-day trip. After spending a day in Portland, we headed southwest to the Oregon Coast Highway (US 101) and followed that south into the northwest corner of California and then on home.

To my eye, the Oregon coast is in some ways familiar, having some similarities to parts of the northern and central California coastlines that I know quite well. But it seems generally a bit more remote – especially by comparison to the California coast near the San Francisco and Monterey areas – and the ocean seems a bit wilder. The towns are mostly further apart and smaller. Newport is one of the larger cities, presumably due to the large and protected port at Yaquina Bay. The coast highway crosses this bay on the striking Yaquina Bay Bridge, with its beautiful arch shapes.

This could be one of those “don’t forget to look around” photographs – a reminder to look beyond the most obvious thing that you (and others) might have stopped for. The photograph is from Zion National Park, made on my late October visit when we passed through on the way to shoot further east in Utah. The specific location is a well-known automobile pull-out that features a large and impressive nearby geological feature, with signage around the parking lot mostly about that thing. And it is an interesting and worthy site, but one that I’ve struggled to see as a photograph. In fact, the whole area right near here has been a bit this way – a very interesting place where I’ve stopped a few times, but also one where I’ve had a difficult time seeing how to photograph the attractive features found here.

From this location, trees growing on a middle-distance rise can be seen. I’ve also looked at them before and wondered how or whether they could make a photograph. Those trees are the trees in this photograph. What seemed different this time was the result of interesting and changing lighting conditions. The light was coming from the side and a bit behind the trees, so it highlighted the branches and even created just a tiny bit of that glow that I often look for with this subject. In addition, there were broken clouds about, and they were being blown past fairly quickly by a brisk wind – so the light was in a constant state of change. One moment the trees were in a cloud shadow, and the next they were in sun. When they were in sun, the foreground and background might be in sun, too, or in shade, or even some combination of the two. I love these conditions since so many things are (fleetingly) possible with the light. My approach is to make some guesses about what might with the light, find a composition that I think will work, and then pay careful attention to what is happening. This photograph was exposed during a lucky instant when the clouds shaded the background sandstone cliff, and the slightly cloud-muted sun shone on the trees.

In a land of many arches… this is another one. :-) I’ve come to understand that natural arches and natural bridges, which still seem miraculous to me when I see them and think about how they form, turn out to be almost absurdly common features in the American Southwest. My first exposure was, not surprisingly, at Arches National Monument, where there are more of them than you might believe if you did not see them with your own eyes. They seem to come in all forms and sizes: impossibly slender and long, small and delicate, big and blocky, towering above the surrounding terrain, invisible unless you happen to look the right direction in the right light, short and stubby, and seemingly infinite additional variations.

Since my first acquaintance with the more famous specimens at Arches National Park, I have had the opportunity to see a few others in less accessible locations. This one required a long and convoluted hike through terrain that held its own attractions apart from the arch – in fact, I had almost forgotten about the arch when we reached it. The photograph is from a high point near the arch – on the opposite side from our approach – and from the shady side of the feature at this time of day. From many vantage points it stands a bit too much against the sky, which did not seem to me to be the most attractive background. From this spot it was possible to find a camera position where the sky was out of the frame, and this allows the shape and texture of the arch to be seen in the light reflected from nearby walls.

The narrow canyons and slots of South Utah, which I’m just coming to know, are full of surprises at every turn. The “turns” are a literal source of the surprise, since you can’t generally see far up or down the canyons and each turn literally does reveal things that were not visible a moment before. As you progress up (or down) the canyons, the nature of the rock constantly changes as you pass through layers of angled strata of rock – smooth and deep red one moment, pale and broken another, and then light pink or gray. The incline of the canyon changes, as does its width – one moment you are walking on a veritable sidewalk, smooth and wide, and the next you are trying to find your way over rocks and boulders, walking up the middle of a stream, trying to avoid deep and sucking sand, squeezing through a slot, or looking for a higher route around an impassable section. The canyon might be rocky and seemingly devoid of plant life… or you might have to squeeze your way among trees and bushes.

This small canyon presented most of these variables at one point or another. Most of the time we were acutely aware of the stream in the canyon, as our route was in, around, or across the water almost constantly. Here a few small bushes found cracks in the rocky walls with sufficient soil to survive, and the light from far above bounced back and forth between the high canyon walls, picking up the reddish color of the sandstone.
