Dawn along the tree-lined shore of Moraine Lake in Sequoia National Park, California. Moraine Lake is along the “High Sierra Trail” route between Crescent Meadow in the western Sierra and Whitney Portal on the east side of the range. This photograph was made last week as I crossed the range from west to east with a group of friends – who were all still warm in their sleeping bags while I arose before dawn to prowl the lakeshore and get this sunrise photograph.

Rhyolite Bank at First Light

My brother and I photographed these bank ruins and surrounding artifacts in the abandoned ghost town of Rhyolite, Nevada – starting before dawn and continuing for the next few hours. This photograph was made just as the first light began to illuminate the town site through high clouds. This bank building is one of the least damaged buildings in the town.

I’m fascinated by how these buildings have weathered over the past century, being situation in a very hostile environment. In some ways it is amazing that they have proven durable enough to remain partially standing, but in other ways they remind me of very ancient ruins.

Dawn, Near Death Valley Dunes

Dawn light on dried and cracked desert surface near Death Valley Dunes, with the Funeral Mountains in the distance. This photograph was made more or less from behind the dunes, as approached from the Stovepipe Wells direction.

Yet another “dawn behind the dunes” photograph from my April 2008 visit to the Valley. These old cracked mud formations are found in the low areas around the dunes and provide an interesting contrast to the rippled formations of the sand, especially when low angle light brings out the textures.

Sunrise at the Death Valley Dunes with the Funeral Mountains in the distance.

This was shot at about the same time as the photograph I posted yesterday, also right an sunrise and in a location “behind” the dunes from the perspective of the nearby highway.
