Three pelicans in flight along the Pacific Ocean coastline near Davenport, California.

I had a few hours to photograph along the coast north of Santa Cruz, California on this morning so I decided to head up as far as Waddell Creek beach (part of Big Basin State Park) and see what I could come up with. The light wasn’t promising. It was foggy – which can be interesting – but the sort of fog that sits a few hundred feet up above the ocean, leaving the view sort of dismal and gray. I figured that possibilities might include certain landscape photographs (perhaps on the fog/sun boundary, where things can be interesting), wildflowers (near their peak along the coast, and often interesting in soft, diffused light), and wildlife.

I’m always interested in photographing the pelicans that skim up and down the coast, often in groups of a half a dozen or more. At my first stop at Scott Creek I didn’t see much of interest, so I kept going. Just north of here the road travels along the edge of tall coastal bluffs, and shore birds often skim right along the edge of these cliffs. I stopped at one such spot where I’ve photographed before and made a few photographs of gulls and pelicans and other birds, but then quickly moved on to Waddell Creek beach.

After shooting at Waddell for a while I headed back to the south. Near the top of the hill rising south from Waddell, I happened to look to the west and saw a large flock of pelicans passing right along the bluff, not more than 15-20 feet from the edge. I slowed and before I could stop another large flock repeated the pass of the first group. I quickly unloaded by gear and headed out to the edge of the bluff… only to wait for 10-15 minutes without another flock passing by. (I could have predicted that! :-) However, patience paid off and eventually several large groups appeared along the bluff and passed right in front of me, including this trio that was part of a much larger flock.

Three Pelicans In Low-Level Flight

Three Pelicans fly just above the beach and surf near Waddell Beach along the California Pacific Ocean coastline.

I hope you don’t mind if I indulge – yet again – in my pelican obsession! I’m endlessly fascinated by these wonderful birds found, among other places, along the California Pacific Ocean coastline. (Note: This morning I read the unfortunate news that the pelicans may be undergoing some sort of stress this winter and some fear one of the periodic pelican “die-offs.”)

I photographed these birds on a dark and cloudy early December day. A bit earlier I had spotted a first group of them descending from above bluffs to the south to land at the delta of Waddell Creek along this beach. Gradually a few more groups of them arrived until there were a good number collected in a group. After a few moments, and for no reason that I could discern, they all lifted off at the same moment and flew across the beach in front of me, at first mere inches off the surface of the sand, and then turning out to sea and rising above waves before disappearing.

Trust me, I can make sharp photographs of pelicans. But here I like the obvious blur from the camera motion and from the motion of the birds through the air as well as from their moving wings – to me this image more strongly suggest their nearly constant motion than the sharper photographs I’ve made of them.

Flock of Gulls

A huge flock of gulls takes to the air at the Piedras Blancas Elephant Seal Rookery, California.

While photographing the elephant seals last weekend at the Piedras Blancas Elephant Seal Rookery just south of the Big Sur coastline of central California, an absolutely flock of shore birds took flight above the beach. I quickly lifted the camera up from the elephant seals and photographed into the cloud of birds as it rose and turned above the beach. While other photographs in the series show an even greater density of birds, this one shows some of the individuals – at least in the larger versions on my computer screen.

Yes, more pelicans. What else can I say? :-)
