At some point on almost any Sierra Nevada backcountry trip I get the bug to photograph rocks — just plain rocks. In case you haven’t noticed, there are a lot of them in these mountains, and their variety is astounding. I’m no geologist — I’m one of those folks who refers to too many things as “granite” — but I’m a bit of a connoisseur of fractures, stains, lichen, colors, and junctures between different materials.

Earlier on this backcountry visit I had realized that some outcroppings very close to our camp were full of interesting patterns, and I made a mental note to spend some time among them. A few days later, not having any other pressing subjects to photograph, I spent an evening walking slowly among these formations.

A group of us recently spent a week base-camped at a Sierra Nevada backcountry location, photographing extensively all around our location. It was quite a week — great time with friends, hikes up into beautiful alpine terrain, wild weather, brilliant sunsets, and lots of beautiful subjects to photograph. The spectacular nature of the surrounding terrain, with broad valleys and high rocky peaks, suggested photographs of the monumental landscape. However, there were plenty of more intimate subjects, too.

At some point on almost any excursion like this one I spend time photographing small things, and near the beginning of this trip I spotted some fascinating rocks nearby and made a mental note to devote at least an evening to photographing them. These rocks were quite colorful, with combinations of warm and cool tones. Opportunistic plants grew along the base of the rocks and extended up fractures in the rock.

We recently returned from a week in the Eastern Sierra backcountry, base-camping with good friends and fellow photographers in an area of exceptional beauty and photographic opportunities. I made this photograph one morning in an area of extensive meadows a short distance from our home base. I always think of scenes like this as epitomizing the “range of light” Sierra — high, open country on comfortable, sunny days.

Truth be told, in addition to these conditions, we also encountered some extraordinary weather that was unusual for this time of year. Within the first hours of arriving here a powerful electrical storm arrived and pinned us down in tents for hours as lightning flashed, thunder boomed, rain and hail poured down, and the landscape flooded. I don’t recall a similar summer experience in these mountains in decades of backcountry travel.

Rugged and fractured rocks on the California Pacific Ocean coast.

If you have been following along recent youly have likely figured out by now that I was fascinated by this formation at Point Lobos State Reserve. In fact, I was so fascinated by it that I not only turned my attention away from the larger landscape, but I ended up photographing this these rocks from three different angles and positions.

I got up close for this version, setting up the camera just in front of the subject and angling the camera slightly upwards. I found the large patterns of fractured rock interesting, but I also liked some of the smaller features that require a closer look — the odd dimpling effect on the surface of the rock, the bits and pieces of ocean life, and so on. The soft light coming through a deck of coastal clouds helped reveal some of these details.
