Smoke drifted in and out as I photographed trees in this meadow. The light changed as beams passed through a gap in the ridge and moved across the landscape. I moved from position to position, trying to keep up with the unfolding scene. Landscape photography can be less of the sedate and quietly thoughtful experience than some assume. We work with the conditions we are given, and sometimes they are quite dynamic. Recently I shared another photograph of this same group of trees, made at almost the same time. Even disregarding the slightly different compositions, a comparison shows how much the light and haze changed between the two exposures.

How we regard fire in a place like this is a complex subject, especially for those of us who were brought up during the decades when Smoky the Bear told us that the only good fire is no fire at all. It turns out that Smoky was wrong, and too much fire suppression allowed extremely flammable undergrowth and detritus to build up, and when fire did inevitably arrive it consumed forests whole, utterly destroying them in many cases. New, enlightened policies recognize that fire is a natural part of forest ecology, and that it keeps the forest healthy. The smoke in this photograph comes from a managed fire, designed to clear out the built-up undergrowth. Yet, while I know this is a good thing, I can’t say that I enjoy working in the smoke!

A Yosemite Valley trail winds among big trees and dense autumn foliage.

My feelings about Yosemite Valley, the location of this photograph, are… complicated. The place is in my bones. I first visited decades ago when I was just a child — yes, I watched the original firefall. I’ve gone scores of times since then, and I have seen the place in all seasons and all kinds of conditions. There’s no question that it is an utterly remarkable, almost unbelievable landscape. On the other hand, the human impact can be troubling. There are traffic jams, the increasingly necessary rules and regulations are jarring, it can be smoky and smoggy. Honestly, I avoid the place as much as possible udring the summer months. And yet…

… it IS “in my bones.” And I keep going back. Autumn may be my favorite season, and on the right day and in the right places it is possible to escape the impediments to the enjoyment of the Valley’s beauty — perhaps during a quiet moment along a mostly-deserted trail that passes big trees, with the space between them filled by delicate branches of maples and dogwoods transitioning to autumn colors.

After years of photographing near her, this row of tall and straight aspens is almost an old friend. I visit every fall, trying to time my arrival for the best color — well into the colorful phase, but with most leaves still intact. I also time it for late in the day, when this canyon falls into shade and the light softens, revealing colors and shadow details that are lost in bright midday light.

This group of trees is a welcome exception to the typical Sierra patterns of aspen growth. In photographs from other parts of the American West you may see extensive groves of tall straight aspens extending into the distance. That sort of thing is extremely rare here. The trees are often much shorter and they are frequently twisted and bent. But occasionally, where the conditions are right, the Sierra manages to produce some of the tall and straight specimens… like those seen here.

I love wandering in dense aspen groves, especially the sort with small, twisty trees. They look like they should be easy to photograph — after all, they are filled with white trunks, the light filters through the colorful canopy, and underfoot there are leaves and all sorts of other goodies. But once I enter the grove, it inevitably turns out to be harder than expected to find the elusive ideal subjects and compositions. A bit of bright sky overwhelms the trees, a distracting branch or boulder enters the frame, the colors are lovely but can’t be corralled into a composition, the undergrowth is too thick to traverse.

But I eventually I do find something that works and avoids (at least mostly) the pitfalls described above. I think that this little group of five white-trunk aspens is one that works. The trunks stand clear enough of the background details that their shapes are clearly visible. The background has no spots of intense daylight, and the colors range from green through golden-yellow to a bit of orange.
