Sandhill cranes in wetlands before sunrise.

There are many special times of day out in the wetlands at this time of year, but I love these moments just before sunrise, especially on foggy mornings. The fog, even somewhat thin fog like this, shrinks your world and makes the scene more intimate. It also mutes the light and somehow adds to the quiet and tranquility of the scene.

On this November morning I decided to place my bets on this scene, stopping here and photographing as I waited for the first direct light to strike the birds after sunrise. This hour is a time of transition for the birds, who generally start to become more active as they prepare to depart in the early light. And sure enough, by the time I finished here most of them took off in small groups.

About a week ago I made my first visit of the season to areas of California’s Central Valley where I like to photograph migratory birds in the late autumn and winter. Many birds have already arrived, but a month or so from now there will be all sorts of them (migratory and year-round residents) up and down the Great Valley: geese, cranes, ibises, herons, pelicans, egrets, and more.

This first visit was a brief one — I arrived early but left at midday. I had been thinking of making the trip for a week or so, but had not seen the weather I was hoping for. Then I heard that there might be a bit of tule fog — that’s my kind of weather! — so I quickly decided to get up hours before dawn the next morning and drive over there in darkness. It was still too early in the season to find the vast flocks of birds that will arrive later, but I did spot some large groups of sandhill cranes. This quartet was holding forth near a larger group, and at this moment had begun a vigorous performance of the crane dance.

Autumn Trees and Morning Fog

Autumn fog clears above wetland trees in California’s Great Central Valley.

This past week I made my first trip of this fall and winter season to California’s Great Central Valley. During other times of the year I usually pass through this landscape on my way to some other place — to the Sierra, mostly, but perhaps to Southern California or even north toward Mount Shasta and then the Pacific Northwest. To be honest, it is not a place where I want to spend a lot of time in the summer! But in autumn the weather cools, beautiful tule fog rises in the morning, migratory birds are abundant, and the atmosphere and light can be subtly beautiful.

This is hardly a landscape of icons. The terrain is mostly flat and largely agricultural. Perhaps the closest to that sort of thing might be the occasional clear views of the Sierra Nevada. But if you poke around in the right places on the right days in the right conditions… there is a lot to see here. I made this photograph in a wetland area that I frequent. I was hoping for thick fog when I headed out there before dawn — I did not quite get that, but the thinner fog allowed a bit more light on the scene while the thin fog softened the colors and features.

Central Valley Coyote

A coyote pauses during an early evening hunt in California’s Central Valley.

We know that coyotes are about in the locations where we photograph migratory birds in the autumn and winter. We often hear their cries in the evening, and occasionally we’ll catch sight of them in the distance as they trot across the grassland toward a tasty-looking flock of birds, no doubt encountering equally tasting small mammals along the way. However, seeing one this close in the daytime is a bit less typical.

It was the last hour before sunset, as you might guess from the warm and low-angle light, when this specimen appeared not far away from my position. It was most certainly aware of my presence, but it didn’t seem overly concerned as it passed, pausing occasionally to look around and even cast a glance in our direction.
