Big Sur Coastline Near Rocky Creek with giant winter surf and low fog.

The conditions were a bit unusual on this winter day. The “fog” is not the usual coastal fog drifting in from the ocean. Rather, it was the result of tremendous amounts of spray being thrown up by the huge winter surf that was rolling in.

Late spring morning on the Big Sur Coast near Bixby Bridge. I had just enough time to drive down to this point and back on a weekend morning when the sun was breaking through the coastal fog earlier than usual.

I’ve lived in California almost my entire life. I frequently head down to and beyond Monterey and Carmel to photograph the upper portion of the Big Sur Coastline. But I’m somewhat embarrassed to admit that I’ve never driven the entire Big Sur coast, much less photographed it. I was finally able to rectify that situation last week. Purple spring wildflower (Dichelostemma capitatum, blue dicks) photographed at Almaden Quicksilver Park in central California.

I want to thank Gina Zolotar for helping identify this and other wildflowers I photographed this spring. I know these plants and flowers well – I can tell you when they bloom and where to find them and I can locate the plants even when they are not in bloom. But I’m absolutely pathetic when it comes to remembering the common names of plants and flowers, much less their scientific names.
