Mesquite Plants, Dunes

Mesquite Plants, Dunes, Death Valley
“Mesquite Plants, Dunes” — Mesquite plants growing on sand dunes, Death Valley National Park.

Mesquite manages to survive and occasionally prosper in very unlikely conditions. This thriving instance is growing in the middle of dunes in Death Valley, not exactly the most friendly environment. In the dunes, isolated clumps of vegetation like this create their own little ecosystems. The plants interfere with the windblown passage of sand, and in their shelter you can often find evidence of animal life — insects, lizards and snakes, occasional tracks of small mammals.

If you spend much time out in the dunes you soon realize that a lot of these plants are dead or nearly so, existing now just as snags. It is a tough environment! This little clump of mesquite is one of the healthiest I have encountered.

Clarity is of course terrific, but even more interesting is the contrast between life and apparent death.

That contrast is never far away in the desert, is it?

Wetlands, First Light

Wetlands, First Light
“Wetlands, First Light” — Dawn sky and thinning tule fog above a reflecting wetlands pond.

Yes, I’m still working the winter Central Valley photographs — and I’m not done yet! As I have said many times, this is probably my favorite winter subject. Or perhaps I should write “subjects,” since these locations offer both landscape and wildlife photography subjects at this time of year. Although they are not featured in this photograph, this is a prime part of California for winter migratory birds.

You can never predict with certainty what the fog will do on these winter mornings. The surprise this time was a “hole” that opened in the fog, producing clear skies in our little area while our surroundings were still obscured. This photograph looks east, across a pond and the fog bank, toward the first dawn light above the Sierra Nevada.

Water Plants, Fog

Water plants
“Water Plants, Fog” — Water plants in a wetlands pond enveloped by tule fog.

When I photograph in the wetlands I am always fascinated by plants that grow in the shallow water, and especially by the stark forms of winter-dormant plants. The background of water — often reflecting sky — lets us see the forms of the plants without the distractions that would render them hard to see in dry areas.

Here I had an added advantage from tule fog that obscured anything more than a few yards away from me. (The slightly more distant plants at upper left are already muted by the fog.) The air was also still — or the fog would have dissipated — and this helped smooth the surface of the water, leaving just enough rippling to add a bit of texture suggesting the watery background

Leaves and Rain

Leaves and Rain
“Leaves and Rain” — Lush green leaves with raindrops, Stirling Castle garden, Scotland.

We did not go to this location intending to photograph garden leaves, but sometimes opportunities just come up. This May we visited Stirling, Scotland for a few days. The plan was to spend time in a less-visited Scottish location — not just less known to tourists in general but specifically to us! We knew little about the town before visiting, but it turned out to be an enjoyable stop. I made the photograph at Stirling Castle, a site connected to a lot of history in Scotland and United Kingdom. It was a rainy day — this happens in Scotland! — and we found these water-sprinkled leaves in a lovely garden near the castle’s entrance.

It wasn’t my intention when I made the photograph, but in some ways this little picture exemplifies some impressions of Scotland. It is, by and large, a very green place! The closest analog that I have in the United States might be the Pacific Northwest, the more coastal sections of which share this lush quality. It is also, again like the Pacific Northwest, a wet place. We did, in fact, have some lovely and sunny weather, but we also had days of fog, mist, rain, and clouds.
