A safety pylon casts a shadow on green metal panels next to black plastic.

This photograph came out of my participation in a project to photograph orange things (around Halloween, not surprisingly) with a group of fellow photographers. The group gets together every so often — virtually at the current time — to share recent photographic work. I suspect that the reasons include both social value and photographic value, but these little exercises can be useful, especially if you are trying to get “un-stuck,” are looking to explore something different, or are just seeking out a way to practice the work of seeing.

Because it was around Halloween I wanted to avoid going for the low-hanging fruit and just photographing pumpkins and autumn leaves. So for a couple of weeks as I walked around my community I kept my eyes open for anything orange. I also started to try to think a bit more broadly about what it meant to photograph orange — and one idea was that orange could easily just be one component color in a subject. Since I was looking for that color, it isn’t a surprise that the pylon first caught my attention. But I quickly started thinking about the relationship between green and orange, the shadow, and the dark pattern at the left side.

An old suburban home with barred window, purple trim, brick steps, and plastic Christmas Tree – San Jose, California.

I made this photograph on a late afternoon/early evening “photo walk” from my home. This is an interesting and perplexing building. It is a very unusual home, as you can see from the unusual room line and the shapes at the end of the rounded eaves. Someone perhaps once put a lot of thought and effort into creating such an unusual building – unlike most others in the area. But as the place has aged the result has not been wholly wonderful. The purple paint isn’t necessarily a bad thing – just a bit unusual – but it is quite worn. The tiny plastic Christmas tree to the right of the front door is a strange touch; it still has a very small string of lights attached. And things are a bit off-kilter. The room angles don’t quite match up and the grate over the window tilts to one side. Although this was originally a home, I can’t really tell for sure if it is still a home or if it has become some sort of office or business.

Plastic Covered Window

Plastic covers the window of a stucco house being remodeled in San Jose, California.

This photograph was taken literally within walking distance of my home – I know this because I walked there! At first the slanting shadows dropping from right to left across the wall caught my attention. Then the interplay between the shadows and the deep textures of the stucco wall caught my eye. Eventually, I began to like the plastic sheet (obviously put there to protect the glass from paint) and the way it obscures the interior of the building. In the end I can’t make up my mind whether the photo is simply a geometric/texture study or perhaps something a little more mysterious.
