An accidental geometric abstraction of shapes formed by metal tubes of racks and railings and their shadows, San Francisco
On a late-Spring visit to San Francisco on the weekend when SFMOMA was last open before its two-year closing for remodeling and expansion, I arrived on the Caltrain from the South Bay very early in the morning and had time to wander the streets a bit before going to the museum. At one point I walked past a place close to the museum, a spot I have walked by many times before, and spotted this junction of lines, curves, shadows, and light and dark space.

I grabbed this photograph while walking through an area of what seems to me like it might be called the outer Pearl District. (True Portlandians could no doubt narrow it down more specifically.) This is a very pleasant area of more-or-less downtown Portland that seems to gentrifying – with some elements left from an older era and many things seeming to be updated and changed.
This building is on a street with a number of older buildings – with enough bricks to make this earthquake-country person just a bit nervous. Aside from that, a lot of the buildings seem familiar to someone from the San Francisco Bay Area. As we walked past, several things grabbed my attention for no particular reason: the combination of red/brown and shades of green, the horizontal pipe interrupting the rough and painted over surface of the brick foundation, and the somewhat geometric quality of the composition.

Ambient light, shadows, architecture and vegetation on a night photography shoot.
In November 2012 I joined my friends from The Nocturnes, the San Francisco Bay Area night photography group, for a get-together and shoot at the historic Mare Island Naval Ship Yard. Since this was an “alumni night” event, there was a certain ritual to be followed. Folks who were new to Mare Island arrived early to tour the site – the first west coast naval ship yard, with history going back well over 150 years. A bit later, the “veterans” arrived to join everyone else for events that began with sharing of photographs, continued with pizza, and then led to a night of, well, night photography nearby.
The weather was not promising. We knew that a weather front was on its way, and we hoped – though we probably knew better – that it might hold off long enough to complete some photography. (Those of us with smartphones, checking the weather radar updates, knew better.) The tell-tale south wind was rising as we headed out, and within moments of starting to photograph an old wooden building the rain began. At first I continued to shoot under my umbrella, but soon it was just plain too wet to stay out. Fortunately, we had arranged for access to one of the historic officer’s quarters buildings and photographing inside and around this building quickly became the fall-back plan. I ended up on the front porch with Mark Citret and Tim Baskerville where we intermittently talked photography and made a few shots of things that didn’t require us to stand in the rain. At one point I parked myself near an end of the old porch and made this photograph of the shadow of my rig falling the wall of the building.

I had joined up with a group of night photographers that I often shoot with on this evening, and we were sitting around in the late afternoon hours sharing pizza when someone made the radical suggestion of going out to shoot before darkness arrived! In the past, this has been just about the only group of photographers I’ve ever met who would stay inside during a San Francisco Bay area golden hour and sunset period, anxious for the light to go away so that shooting could begin! But on this evening, the radical concept of shooting in the daylight must have seemed so innovative that quite a few of us headed out to find either landscape-style shots over the San Francisco Bay or else abandoned and dilapidated industrial subjects nearby. I opted for the latter, and hoping to cover a bit more ground before dark, rather than walking nearby I drove, trying to figure out where I wanted to be in the fading light.
I ended up near this lonely, abandoned and partially destroyed building that has been left to vandals, who seem to be doing their best to accelerate the natural destructive forces that eventually take such buildings. Many windows are broken, there is spray paint in many places, and the exterior of the building is tremendously weathered and worn. Just a few minutes before sunset I made a series of exposures of this building, using a long lens to isolate smaller sections of the building. The sunset light turned the otherwise-dull building a much more intense shade of brown/yellow, and the brighter sky and clouds over San Francisco Bay are reflected in the broken windows. Soon after I finished shooting, the sun set, and I headed back to where my nocturnal friends awaited, and we headed out to photograph in the night.
