Wetlands And Sky

On the first day of winter, as this year approaches its conclusion and a new year approaches, it always seems like time to look back over the past year. With that in mind, this photograph looks back to the very first day of 2017, when we met the dawn of the new year out in the San Joaquin Valley, accompanied by a few good friends and tens of thousands of migratory birds.

This photograph comes from a bit later in the day, when the edge of low clouds was close to our position and the sky and clouds were reflected in the wetland ponds. There were few birds in this scene when I made the photograph, which is likely why I put down my “bird camera” and its big lens and picked up a smaller camera with a wide-angle lens to photograph this larger view.

Geese, Fog, Dawn

The sensory experience of arriving at a place like this is remarkable. To understand you need to consider how it begins — a wake-up call at 3:00 or 3:30, a very quick cup of coffee, gear tossed into my vehicle, and departure for a two-hour drive in darkness out into California’s Great Central Valley. Most of the drive is on high-speed roads, at least until I get close to my destination, where I frequently encounter very thick winter tule fog — treacherous driving conditions that may force me to drop my speed to 20 mph or slower as I stare into the foggy darkness. Finally I arrive, pass through an entrance gate, and drive to a parking area and turn off the engine.

I open the door. The air is cold and damp. It is still and it would be silent… but for the wild calls of thousands of geese and cranes and other birds, often concealed behind the fog. In an instant I switch from my high-speed world cocooned in my heated vehicle to an entirely different world of fog, cold air, and the birds. Often I can’t help by smile when I hear the wild calls of those birds, and sometimes I almost laugh out loud. On this morning the fog thinned just a bit when I arrived, and it was possible to make out flocks of geese rising from ponds not far away as the first color came to the morning sky.

Wetland Pond, Reflected Sky

I made this photograph during our annual New Year’s Day visit to the migratory birds of California’s Central Valley, something that has become more or less a tradition during the past few years. The idea is to join a few like-minded friends to greet the literal dawn of the new year, and to then spend the day photographing. The only problem with this as a New Year’s Day celebration is that we have to get up at about 3:30 AM, making it somewhat difficult (or at least unwise!) to stay up until midnight the night before.

This time we arrived, as always, very early, and spent the morning working our way around the vicinity trying to figure out where the best locations would be for photographing the birds. The usual schedule has us photographing for a few hours into the late morning, then taking a sort of time out in the middle of the day — often including a nap to compensate for that early wake-up call — and then resuming the wild goose chase at some point in the afternoon. Late in the day we were still trying to decide where we wanted to be for sunset, so we drove a gravel road that took us past this pond on our way to a likely goose roosting spot — and I saw this beautiful reflection of the winter sky along the way.

Geese, Sunset Clouds

It is summer… and I miss winter! I used to think that it was more of the case that I simply look forward to whatever season it isn’t, but I have come to realize that summer just isn’t my favorite time of year — at least not for photography. (Don’t take this the wrong way, though. There is plenty to photograph all year long, and I make a lot of photographs during the summer, too.) Over the past few years I have come to love the winter Central Valley, especially when I can photograph migratory birds, fog, and the immense skyscape.

This late-February day was special for photography. Surprisingly, it began in Yosemite Valley, where we had been for several days for the opening on the Yosemite Renaissance exhibit. Up early, we photographed in the Valley until midday, and then we began a lazy westward drive though the foothills that would take us to San Joaquin Valley wetlands to photograph birds at the end of the day. In the evening there was a tremendous fly-in of geese and cranes, and large flocks passed in front of beautiful clouds. Here a flock of Ross’s geese is backlit by the light from the west.
