Spring Flow

For a place made of stone, the Sierra Nevada can be a surprising transitory subject. Summer is brief, and wildflowers bloom and are soon gone. Color comes to aspens in the fall and is gone weeks later. Spring is the time of rushing water in the Sierra, from the high country to the lowlands. The water rises as the snow melts, creeks and rivers fill to their banks, and waterfalls appear. I photographed this minor torrent along the Merced River as it passes through Yosemite Valley.

Every landscape photographer I know has tried his or her hand at photographing the moving water this way. No matter what other marvelous landscape features are around, eventually we come back to the water and try to do something with the ever-changing colors and shapes of water. This is that “what the camera sees” sorts of photography, since our eyes cannot see the river this way, and these shapes and colors change too quickly without the camera to grab and hold them.

Fractured Canyon Wall

With this photograph I believe I’ll conclude my nostalgic return to photographs from my 2012 autumn visits to Utah. It was a special autumn for my in Utah, as I was able to visit twice for a period adding up to almost a full month. On the second visit I was able to travel into some out-of-the-way locations, a few of which were shared with me by people who live and photograph there. That was quite a privilege. It has been too long since I’ve photographed there. Perhaps I can return next year?

This is simply a bit of canyon wall, and the specific location is hardly relevant at all — you can find rock like this all over Utah. Part of what attracted me to this little vignette was the boundary between darker old rock and the lighter rock below where some of the older material has obviously broken away. The surface of the upper, darker area is fascinating to me, and a close look reveals remarkable colors, textures, and shapes on its surface.

Canyon Cottonwoods, Autumn

Back on this autumn day in 2012 three of us entered this lovely canyon and gradually worked our way down a few miles of its length, following its sinuous path around bends as it dug deeper into the red rock landscape of Southern Utah. I had spent close a month in Utah that season, and this was during the final few days of this period — and this “Sierra Guy” was starting to get a feel for this beautiful landscape.

These trees, in peak autumn color, stood at a bend in the canyon. This river canyon follows a classic meandering pattern, with short straight sections alternating with bends carved deeply into the sandstone terrain. In general the straight sections tend to be a bit more open while the bends tend to be places of deeper shade. This spot was definitely in the latter category, and the reflected soft light saturated the warm tones of the autumn colors.

Autumn Reflections, Merced River

Some years back, as is my annual tradition, I was in Yosemite Valley in autumn to photograph fall color and other aspects of the seasonal change. To be honest, I mostly avoid the Valley during the summer time. It is a spectacular place any time of year, but I’ll happily avoid the oppressive crowds and overly-hot weather and visit during the other three seasons.

I distinctly recall the circumstances of this photograph. It was morning, and there had been some light early snow. The sun was coming out in the morning, the temperature warmed, and the melting snow was dropping from every tree. As I walked across a bridge on my way to a different subject I happened to look down and see the patterns created as the droplets fell into the Merced River, creating expanding and overlapping rings. I was entranced. I stopped and set up, forgetting about my original goal, and focused on this subject instead.
