Passing Storm, Split, Croatia

Passing Storm, Split, Croatia
“Passing Storm, Split, Croatia” — A summer storm passes over Split, Croatia.

While staying in Trogir, Croatia, a ways up the coast from Split, we went for a long, looping drive into the mountains and to some rural, agricultural country. Our main objective was an olive-growing area where we stopped in the middle of the day. After that we continued on a route that would take us closer to Split on our return to Trogir.

As we topped the ridge to the east of the town we came to the Klis Fortress — as I understand it, historically this remarkable ridge-top structure guarded the pass that provided access to Split. As we explored the place the weather began to deteriorate, and before long we were running for cover as strong rain showers passed over. This view looks out over Split towards the passing storm.

Meadow, Storm Clouds

Meadow, Storm Clouds
“Meadow, Storm Clouds” — Sunlight in a meadow as storm clouds build near the Sierra Nevada crest, Hoover Wilderness

After an absence from the Sierra during some 2023 international travel, I was anxious to get back up there again. Shortly after our return I headed to the mountains for a few days of high country camping and photography. By then it was late in the season and the first hints of cold-season weather fronts were arriving — there was “interesting weather” during much of my visit.

I made this photograph as I headed up a drainage in the Eastern Sierra along the western edge of Yosemite National Park. (The distant peaks mark the park’s boundary.) Clouds shrouded the peaks, and some light snow had fallen. The wind was blowing and cloud shadows moved rapidly across the landscape. I set up and waited, and made this photograph as light hit the meadows just in front of me and illuminated the distant ridge.

Sunset Storm, Mono Lake

Sunset Storm, Mono Lake
“Sunset Storm, Mono Lake” — An evening storm moves over Mono Lake at sunset.

Occasionally nature throws some light at me that seems just plain unreal — effects so unusual that even I start to doubt what I saw. Often this happens at sunset or sunrise when the conditions align just right, as they did on this evening. It had been cloudy and raining, and there was still moisture in the air as the clouds began to break up in the north and west. As that happened, colorful sunset light came in over the Sierra crest and illuminated the clouds from within.

I had anticipated that something interesting might happen on this evening, but this intensely colorful light took me by surprise. In the photograph we look at and across Mono Lake from a high point to the southwest of the lake, right into the brilliantly colored clouds to the north.

Piazza Grande, Arezzo

Piazza Grande, Arezzo
“Piazza Grande, Arezzo” — Buildings along the perimeter of the Piazza Grande, Arezzo, Italy.

During the summer of 2023 we went on a 10-week ramble though (mostly) Southern Europe. During the latter part of the trip we made a circuit through portions of Italy over a period of about three weeks. We made a point of visiting a few smaller places like this town of Arezzo. It isn’t entirely devoid of tourists, but it is nothing like the big, popular places. The photograph comes from the “Piazza Grande,” or grand square, in the upper part of the town.

It is a fascinating place. One signature feature of the square is that it tilts. It is built near the top of a hill in this high part of the town, and the slope is quite impressive. The square is surrounded by buildings that are hundreds of years old. We were there a couple of times, but on this afternoon we got there just before a thunderstorm arrived. and we quickly took refuge in a restaurant beneath a portico on the piazza as the storm began.
