Morning Light, Big Sur Coast

Morning Light, Big Sur Coast
“Morning Light, Big Sur Coast” — Morning light, haze, and surf along the Big Sur Coast.

After a period of travel (Portugal, Spain, Belgium, NYC this time) it is always great to get back to photographing the natural world here in California. This week I heard that a couple of friends were in the Carmel area, less than an hour-and-a-half away, so we decided to meet up for some morning photography along the Big Sur coast. There’s no cell service where we were going, so we agreed to some coordinates on Google maps and set an early arrival time. I showed up, but couldn’t find them, so I made some photographs while waiting…

…including this one of the surf, morning light, and thin fog. As I photographed I noticed a couple of figures moving out onto the headland at the far right. I don’t usually include people in my landscape photography, but I’m not against it either, so I changed the framing a bit to incorporate them. It was only later in the evening, at home and working on photographs at my computer, that I zoomed in on the figures and realized that they are Franka and Dave, the friends I was searching for! (We did eventually connect, by the way.)

Water’s Edge

Water's Edge
“Water’s Edge” — Blue-green water and surf meet the edge of the continent, Big Sur Coast.

I called this “Water’s Edge,” but I could also have called it “Continent’s Edge.” Beyond and above this little vignette of sand and rocks and water and foam lies the entire Pacific Ocean, and behind it lies the North American continent. The location is some likely-nameless spot along the Pacific Coast Highway as it passes through the Big Sur region of Central California.

I had stopped to consider photographing something else when I happened to walk close enough to the edge of the drop-off to see all the way down to the small, rocky beach. I spent a few moments watching and photographing the constantly changing patterns where the blue-green water meets the beach.

Curving Coastline, Fog

Curving Coastline, Fog
“Curving Coastline,Fog” — Successive ridges drop to the Pacific Ocean in fog along the rugged Big Sur Coast.

The Big Sur Coast seems to strtch on forever, with rugged mountains dropping precipitously into the Pacific Ocean. Ridges are separated by small valleys, and a drive along the Pacific Coast Highway often follows a pattern of turning inland to cross a valley and then turning toward the ocean to cross another ridge. And from high on these ridges the views are usually spectacular, taking in great expanses of that coast and Pacific Ocean panoramas.

A combination of characteristics makes this area quite “photographable” outside of the favored very early and very late hours. The coast trends from northwest to southeast, so as midday approaches the sun can be right above the coast, providing backlight that highlights the receding ridges. (A bit later its light reflects off the water.) And often the morning fog has cleared but left a bit of haze behind, and on the best days it glows luminously.

Forest and Cove

Forest and Cove
“Forest and Cove” — Forest trees and a cove on a foggy morning at Point Lobos State Reserve.

The north shore of Point Lobos is a beautiful and wild place. The meeting of land and sea is a bit more rugged here, with taller cliffs. Steep headlands alternate with coves, many of them narrow and full of rough water. The evocative shapes of Monterey cypress trees top the cliffs, some barely clinging to rocky slopes and many acquiring unusual shapes.

I often discover new things about places that I thought I knew well. I’ve been going to Point Lobos since I was a child. I knew, of course, about these fascinating coves, but it only recently occurred to me that they might have names! This one is “Bluefish Cove,” and it is one or the larger ones, more open to the sea. The trail circles around its inner edge, though it is lined with trees that often obscure clear views of its waters. It is a trail, like many at Point Lobos, that rewards casual and aware sauntering more than purposeful, businesslike hiking.
