Zabriskie to Rogers Peak

Poor Rogers Peak doesn’t get a lot of respect. Despite being just under 10,000 feet tall, offering a rather impressive view from close up, and being snow-capped in the winter… it is eclipsed by its neighbor, Telescope Peak, the highest in the park. (You can see a bit of the shoulder of Telescope Peak at the far left.) It doesn’t help that a communications complex has been installed on its summit — which seems like a bit of an inappropriate insult in a national park!

The photograph encompasses a very long view, extending from rugged hills at Zabriskie Point all the way across Death Valley to the summit of the Panamint Mountains. I estimate that this is over 20 miles as the proverbial crow flies. Such distances are common in Death Valley National Park, a huge place with an expansive landscape.

Nürnberg Skyline

This view is from the area around the Imperial Castle of Nürnberg, a prominent high point in central Nürnberg. Much of the terrain here seems flat, but from this high point one has longer views beyond the central old city area. The towers on the left belong to the historic Seboldskirche, but in the distance you can make out some much more modern structures.

,We had been at the famous Christmas market in the central square when we saw a street leading up toward the castle. We were actually unaware of the castle until we arrived there, so it was a fun surprise. (We like to not know too much when traveling, which lets us enjoy more discoveries on our own.) From here we wandered back down into town and ended up on side of the streets that are visible in the photograph.

At Arthur’s Seat

I did not plan to find myself on this summit in Edinburgh. Arthur’s Seat is a landmark here, the summit of a volcanic ridge that rises above the lowlands of the city. It has historical significance — perhaps you can imagine why? — and it is also in the middle of a very large park close to central Edinburgh. I made this photograph at the summit, and you can see that the climb was far from a solitary experience! More about the hike? Read on…

Someone Patty knows heard we were in Edinburgh, knew that we had just hiked the Great Glen Way, and assumed correctly that we were willing to do some walking. He suggested this “little hike,” and his description led us to expect a little nature hike. As we walked from our hotel not far from Edinburgh Castle and spotted a very tall and steep wall to our right we began to wonder what we were getting into! We joined a crowd of people on the hike — many hundreds for sure — as we slowly ascended this stiff climb. If we had known, we might not have done it, but once you get partway up such a thing it is hard to turn back,!

Sailboats, Oban

Oban is a lovely Scottish town — a picturesque spot on the waterfront, with hills and islands all around, fine seafood, good people… and the Oban Whisky Distillery! (Yes, we did the tour, and we bought a bottle as soon as we got back to the states.) There is almost constant boat traffic in the bay in front of the town as fishing boats, small tour boats, sailboats, and ferries come and go.

I made this photograph from McCaig’s Tower, the very old stone structure that sits on a hilltop above the town and offers a remarkable panorama of the surrounding landscape. Shortly after we arrived at the top of the hill a large group of sailboats crossed the bay in front of us, stretching out in a line against the darker land and water.
