Dust Storm, Death Valley

A building dust storm begins to obscure the sky above Death Valley, California.

In retrospect, there were hints that this tremendous dust storm was coming prior to its actual arrival. Very early in the morning I had been photographing at another location and the light and atmosphere were a bit unusual. The dawn and very early morning light was beautifully warm, but the distant peaks were slightly obscured by a sort of atmospheric haze that is hard to describe but which I now recognize as being associated with incoming dust storms. Soon, large and impressive clouds began to appear high in the deep blue sky, but at about the same time the air closer to the bottom of Death Valley started to look increasingly opaque.

I left my early morning shooting location and began my trip home from Death Valley. After a stop at Furnace Creek – to treat myself to a real breakfast after days of camping – I headed north towards Stovepipe Wells. As I headed north I began to see the obvious clouds of blowing dust accumulating along the Grapevine Mountains, and shortly before the turn to Stovepipe I encountered the boundary between the relatively clear air and the murk of the dust storm that was growing directly ahead and off to my left.

Before entering the cloud – I had not choice since my route went that direction – I pulled over within perhaps a quarter-mile of the edge of the storm. Not wanting to risk dust getting into my camera, I unpacked my gear inside the car and decided to just use the lens that was already fitted to the camera. I stepped outside to find that lines of wind-blown dust were already streaming along the ground and that the atmosphere had taken on the strange and electric feel of these storms. Off to my left, the dust was beginning to kick up among some low, dark hills across a nearby wash, while a gap in the dust clouds momentarily left open a window to the bright sky and high clouds above.

Autumn Aspens and Cliff Face

I photographed this little scene on my first real morning of aspen photography this season in early October. I arrived quite early at North Lake, driving up the snowed in gravel road right after it had apparently been reopened. It was unplowed but other vehicles had clearly been up there, I have four-wheel drive, and I wanted to see what I would find before too many others arrived later in the day. There were few people there when I arrived, which was a bit unusual since this area is often crawling with photographers, individually and in workshops, at this time of the year. But the fact that the road was still snow-covered and that the storms had affected the aspens seemed to keep people away.

I parked before arriving at the lake, shouldered my gear, and walked up to the lake. I bypassed the popular spot near the outlet stream – been there, done that! – and keep walking along the road that skirts the right side of the lake. Everything was still frozen and it was very cold – and I regretted not bringing my winter boots along! The aspen photography was not quite what I had hoped, but there were other subjects, among them the fresh snow – an unusual sight for early October!

In looking for subjects other than the “regular” views of North Lake – which can be spectacular and well worth photographing, too – I often walk slowly along the lake-side road and keep my eyes open along the rocky cliffs that line it. Because the direct sunlight doesn’t hit this spot until later in the day, it is often possible to find softer morning light and even some light reflected from across the lake. On this morning I found that many of the aspen leaves had fallen or turned brown as a result of the storm, but a few were left and the stark white trunks of the trees against the rocks seemed like an interesting subject.

Aspen Trunks, Bishop Creek

A group of closely spaced aspen trunks in an autumn grove in the Bishop Creek, California area.

While the truly wild peak colors of the aspen trees are hard to resist, I also like the trees at other stages. This scene shows one other sort of condition that appeals to me as well. The trees might be described as being “past peak,” since most of the leaves have fallen and the bare trunks and branches are now becoming more visible. However, this opens up the light within the groves and gives a better view of the dense arrangement of trunks and branches, and the smaller number of leaves almost stand out more distinctly than the overwhelming masses of them that are seen a bit earlier in the season.

This photograph was made in mid-October. I had visited this area the previous week, but had been almost a bit disappointed by the color at that time. An early October series of cold winter-like storms had passed over the Sierra, leaving a beautiful coating of snow… but also bringing down many of the colorful leaves and turning others black or brown. But one week later, as if to compensate, up and down the east side of the Sierra the colors suddenly went wild.

Trillium Plants, Redwood Forest

This is another of the previously overlooked photographs from a few years back, this time from Muir Woods National Monument in the Golden Gate National Recreation Area. I visit there frequently, and on this occasion I arrived just after the bloom of the trillium flowers had finished, but when the plants were still growing strong.
