A snack vending stand, shuttered for the pandemic.

This is one from the “Postcards from Pandemia” series of photographs that I occasionally make while out walking through and around my semi-locked-down world. The subject here is a building that I pass regularly as I walk through a nearby park. Typically this would be the busy snack bar for the local Little League fields, with parents working inside and kids and families lined up outside to buy candy, sodas, and other snacks. (Gummy Worms, anyone?)

But not this year. I still see the occasional small group of kids with a parent or two playing catch or practicing batting, but no games and no crowds. It is a bit less so now than it was back in late-March and early April when the world shut down around here. At that point I could walk and see virtually no one — I often just walked in the streets since there was no traffic.

Blue building and unusual plants in evening light, Mendocino, California

This very blue building stands along a narrow road near the edge of a small Northern California coastal town that we visit from time to time. Late in the afternoon, as evening approached, I was out walking when I saw the building with very low angle, early evening light on these striking plants.

I look forward to the time when we can again travel to such places and spend days walking around slowly, not worrying about distance and masks and whether it is safe to stay nearby or eat at the restaurants. The fact that those things are inaccessible right now makes me hope that we appreciate them more once they come back into our lives.

Lights left on for the night in a shop at the Mare Island Naval Ship Yard.

Returning to this photograph a bit more than eight years after I made it, I no longer recall the specifics of the scene — the nature of the work done in this shop, its exact location, why the lights were still on late at night. I can say that I photographed it at a place where I have photographed a lot over the past 15+ year. During those years I have watched the location change from an abandoned ship yard (which is still its predominant quality) to a place where some of the old buildings have been reclaimed by new tenants. (One impressive old abandoned building is now… a distillery!)

I’m often intrigued by what we can and cannot see when we look through the windows of places like this. I know that there must be a small world in this room, where people work together daily on some kind of productive activity, where they share the language of their professions, and were many of the things I see through the window have meaning that I cannot understand.

Mondrian Wall

Mondrian Wall
“Mondrian Wall” — A wall of a school building closed during the pandemic.

Why, yes, this is from the “Postcards from Pandemia” series of photographs made on my almost-daily walks in the greater neighborhood, an area including a range of subjects in suburban neighborhoods, apartment complexes, closed schools, nearly empty parks, a largely shuttered business district, and light industrial zones.

This is a detail of a wall at the front of a school that is became deserted at about the time when students would have been pushing through the last part of the academic year and looking forward to summer. If you are like me, you might find more than one way to look at this scene.
