One of the great things about travel is that you get to enjoy being naive. No, really. When you go to new places, it is completely normal to not understand everything you see, every tradition, every experience, every norm. It happens in different ways, both major and minor. It happened on this late 2024 trip to parts of Germany, France, and Spain. We knew that we would visit German Christmas markets, but they we learned that Germany has no monopoly on these seasonal events, and they are popular everywhere.

The market in Madrid’s Plaza Mayor was one of the larger ones we encountered in that city. We intended to mostly avoid this tourist magnet, but we ended up there for several reasons after all. First, it seemed to us that we were seeing a lot of Spanish people there — not just international tourists. Second, it was quite impressive to see the place decked out in holiday lights.

Levee Road, Winter

Driving through California’s Great Central Valley, you might think that the place consists of freeways, scattered towns, and distant views. These are port of the experience, but if you get off of the Interstates and poke around in more rural areas you find a very different world. Here we were following a gravel road along a flood control levee on on an early-winter morning.

Roads like this are all over the Central Valley. In the wetter areas they follow levees, but elsewhere they might track along property lines. When I made the photograph a weather front was passing nearby, and the sky was full of impressive clouds.

Winter Reflections, Central Park

I photographed this little scene on a cold morning walk through New York’s Central Park this past December. We were fortunate to have light snow one morning, and that changed the appearance of the city and the park. It had already been cold enough to freeze most of The Lake’s surface, but the light snowfall covered imperfections. In this spot fallen leaves rested on new ice and the reflected the silhouettes of nearby trees.

The concepts of “nature” (and even of “wilderness”) are complex and, I think, not entirely fixed. Sometimes we accept the notion that these things mean “devoid of evidence of humans.” But there’s a problem with that idea — it suggests that humans are independent of the natural world. Finding the natural world in places like this — even if you can perhaps hear car horns in the distance — is a reminder that nature is everywhere and we are a part of it.

Old Tree at Dawn

This may be the last in the string of photographs from my three days in the Central Valley landscape around New Year’s Day. But no promises — there could be more if I dig back into the raw file archives from that trip. Funny story: When I return from shoots like that I often fear that I didn’t come back with much interesting work. But then, after I start digging into the material, I inevitably find quite a bit of work that I like. I have some theories about why this happens, and at some point I’ll expand on them.

This was a really beautiful morning. Pre-dawn tule fog was not too thick – just present enough to soften the atmosphere. High clouds picked up the colors of the coming sunrise. This old tree sits on the edge of a wetlands pond, and I’ve grown to like it as I’ve photographed it over the years. This time I used a wide angle lens so that I could place it more clearly in the context of the larger landscape and skyscape.
