This little meadow, filled with yellow flowers, is in the upper section of the Big Sur coast of California, where I made a very quick trip early on the morning of the Fourth of July — there and back again before most of the holiday traffic arrived. (That traffic was completely jamming all of the area roads heading the opposite direction as I returned home.)

I was a beautiful and relative quiet early morning, with low fog hugging the coast and providing a welcome contrast to the much warmer inland weather. It also was the sort of day — foggy, with bright wildflowers — that can make a Californian temporarily forget this year’s serious drought. This ranch building sits just off the main highway at the base of a couple of small valleys leading up into the coastal mountains.

These BART entrance stations are well-known to San Francisco Bay Area residents. (As are the many stories about them: the wisdom—or not—of outdoor escalators, the necessity of, uh, cleaning them frequently, and more.) They tend to feature a combination of escalators for those going up and stairs for those descending.

I think that they sometimes create a visual center of interest in the cluttered environment of the downtown city. They are ringed by a low metal fence, and this one at least is designed in an attractive curve. (Some other photographs of mine work with that subject.) Looking down from the railings of this fence and tightening the crop enough, I could create a composition of shapes and colors that excluded just about everything but the large vertical shapes broken up by the smaller horizontal shapes, and the contrasting blue and yellow tones. A person begins to enter the frame at the lower right.

Once we figured out that this was turning out to be a rather good wildflower year in Death Valley—rather than the expected complete bust—we began to see wildflowers everywhere. Although there were not too many at the lowest elevations in the most arid and desolate parts of the valley itself, up in the surrounding desert mountains there were a lot of flowers, and in some places the display was downright abundant, with the colorful patches on hillsides visible from a good distance away.

It helped that on what was probably our best wildflower photography day there was a winter storm that not only brought some rain and a bit of snow to the higher elevations but, more importantly, brought clouds and the soft light conducive to flower photography. As we would walk or drive along we might spot a bit of color and get out to look around. Invariably, as soon as we started photographing that color that we first spotted we would look more closely and find more and more examples and more and more kinds of flowers. What seemed like it might be a quick “stop to photograph the yellow flowers,” inevitably turned into a half hour or an hour exploration of a world of small and colorful desert flowers.

I like night photography for a number of reasons. I enjoy the very slow work, finding subjects and compositions in near darkness and then waiting patiently for long exposures to complete. “Normal” photography can be a slow and meditative process, but night photography must be. Given so much time to stand and wait, I cannot help but notice the stillness and quiet of the night, and to feel the cool and damp air. In fact, as a person who does night photography, these things are almost as much part of the experience as the visual elements.

In the visual context, there are a few things about the appeal of night photography that might not occur to a person who has not done it. When photographing in very low light, what we photograph is often very different from what we actually see. Often the subject is quite dark, even when lit by the moon or nearby lights, but the camera doesn’t care—a long enough exposure can collect more light that our eyes can, and a dim and drab subject can become bright. Also, the illusion that the camera stops time is not quite so strong when photographing at night. Over the course of a many minutes long exposure stars move, lights of cars appear and pass, clouds blur into soft streaks, and the edges of shadows from moonlight blur. In industrial areas such as this one, the lighting is a mixture of things glowing from within and lit from without, and the diversity of lighting—tungsten, fluorescent, sodium vapor, LED, mercury vapor, moonlight—paints the nightscape with wild colors. This building is an excellent example. The upper windows emanate a glow from yellow interior light. Relatively colorless light hits the upper walls, but the light takes on an odd blue/pink tone on the lower building, and the shadows head toward blue.
