Fog can make for lovely, evocative atmosphere when photographing birds. In fact, I often try to time my winter bird photography for foggy days. On the best of these days, the sunrise hours begin with slightly translucent fog, colored by dawn light. Then a transition begins as the sun rises and begins to make the shallow tule fog layer glow. The fog continues to thin and the light becomes more directional. Every one of these stages in the evolution of the light has its attractions, and such mornings are often quite busy.

Then there are the foggy days like this one. There is such a thing as too much fog, especially when it comes to bird photography. On this morning conditions were verging on the “I can hear them but I can’t see them” state — and at first I was unable to see most of the birds that I could hear off in the fog. I finally came across this magnificent great blue heron near the edge of a pasture, and I almost missed seeing it in the murk.

Description

My expectations are pretty straightforward. When I arrive at these locations before dawn to photograph birds, I want exactly the right amount of fog, enough developing sunrise light overhead to warm to the light a bit, the right birds against a photogenic background. (A cup of coffee and a fresh muffin would be nice, too, but that might be pushing things.) The reality is usually a bit more complicated.

I certainly found fog when I arrived on this morning. Perhaps a bit too much fog. It wasn’t quite the sort where you might be more successful making audio records of birds than photographing them, but it was close. As I moved around looking for the right birds in the right place, I eventually came upon a group of cranes, barely visible at first in the gray light. Although it isn’t really apparent in the photograph, it was sunrise, and the birds seem to know this even when the sun’s light is blocked by the tule fog. And if it is sunrise, the birds know that it is time to rise from the ponds and head off to wherever it is that they spend their days.

“Feed Lot” — A series of shelters over a feedlot on a foggy Central Valley winter morning.

One of the benefits of photographing in fog is that it can make almost any subject mysterious and moody. Another is that the limited visibilities can mute or eliminate distractions from the visual focus on the elements that are the most interesting. It is hard to imagine a stronger illustration of these principles than a photograph of this particular subject.

I photograph quite a bit in California’s Great Central Valley during the winter months. During much of the year, this is perhaps not an obvious photographic destination (though looking closer may be worthwhile!). But in winter, when dense tule fogs often settle on the landscape, the place can be transformed in magical ways. If you have passed by one of these feedlots on a warm, sunny day… you probably rolled up your windows and held your breath. But morning tule fog on a winter day might can make it worthwhile to stop (while trying hard to ignore the smell!) and make a few photographs.

Orchard, Fog
“Orchard, Fog” — Thick winter tule fog spreads through a Central Valley orchard.

The primary goal of my visit to the Pacific Flyway on this early-January day was to photograph migratory birds in the tule fog. I regularly check the weather predictions at this time of year, since it is the time of “interesting weather,” and this can make all the difference when it comes to the photographic potential of a location. On the day before I made this photograph, my check revealed a very good chance for dense tule fog — the kind that sane drivers try to avoid but which attracts photographers. So I was up very early, ready to drive through the fog for the chance to photograph it.

Local conditions can vary a great deal on days like this. Out where I was photographing birds the sky was beginning to clear, but I still wanted fog. So I drove a ways in a direction where the sky seemed darker, and before long I was once again engulfed. I had this orchard in mind as drove, and when I got there I took a gravel side-road to a spot where I could see an uninterrupted expanse of tree silhouettes fading into the distant fog where the sun was trying to break through.
