The autumn color of aspens, willows, and more comes to the valleys of the Eastern Sierra Nevada.

During the past week I made my first trip to the Eastern Sierra Nevada to look for the annual fall aspen color transition. Broadly speaking — even though there can be some earlier and later aspen color — I regard the first three weeks of October as being the most likely time to find good color, with the second week perhaps being the most reliable period. Over the past few years the transition has seemed to start a bit earlier, but this year it seems to be on what we used to regard as a “normal” schedule. There wasn’t much color at all during the first few days of the month this year, but it was starting to come on more strongly towards the end of the first week. It should be quite good as of this October 8 posting… but that’s a guess, since I’m back home now. (I’ll be heading back up in a few days.)

Since folks often ask me about the aspen color season (perhaps because I wrote “California’s Fall Color: A Photographer’s Guide To Autumn In The Sierra.” Being ready to answer those questions was one reason for visiting early in the season. (OK, the main reason was to make my own photographs! And to make a presentation about autumn color in Mammoth Lakes.) I visited areas between highway 88 (Carson Pass) in the north and Bishop Creek Canyon to the south, stopping in quite a few other places in between. This photograph comes from one of those intermediate stops, a rugged east-side canyon that holds a lot of wonderful fall color from aspens, willows, cottonwoods, and more. (Looking for more information about the aspen color transition? Pease visit my Sierra Nevada Fall Color page.)

Aspens, Eastern Sierra, Earth Shadow

Long before I understood what I was seeing I had noticed and was intrigued by that band of darker sky just above the horizon during the morning and evening twilight, very close to the time that direct sunlight appears on the highest points. There is something very mysterious about it, and it suggests to me great distances beyond those encompassed by the immediate scene. Eventually I learned what now seems obvious — this is the edge of the shadow of the earth, dropping away in the moments before dawn and rising in the moments following sunset. (To this day, every time I think of this, I recall photographer Gary Crabbe’s “interpretive dance” as he explained this at a talk I attended years ago — one hand extended out and upwards pointing to the shadow, and the other extended at a slight downward angle pointing to the unseen sun. Thanks, Gary!)

I made this photograph from a high point east of the Sierra crest one September. I headed out this way in pre-dawn darkness not sure what I would find. I was pleasantly surprised to find extensive aspen color, even though it was just past mid-September, and then to find an open overlook from which I could take in a large section of the Sierra as dawn arrived.

Autumn aspen trees cling to ledges along the face of a cliff in the Eastern Sierra Nevada.

The aspens in this photograph have fascinated me for years. Nearby are some relatively large, tall, and straight trees, but for the most part the trees in this scene are small, slender, and sometimes even a bit misshapen. They manage to eke out a living on what appears to be solid rock as they send their roots into narrow cracks.

These trees seem to have, at least in my experience, a fairly short period of maximum color. Or at least that is what I tell myself when looking to explain why I have somehow almost always missed their best color. But it also appears that they change colors earlier than some of the other trees in the area — I made this photograph just past the middle of September, nearly two weeks before the typical start of the more widespread fall color season in the Sierra.

Sometimes heading away from the sure thing reveals wonderful surprises. Sometimes following up on previous explorations works, too. Occasionally the two align. A year to two earlier we had taken a long drive east of the Sierra Nevada on a fall day. We had been photographing autumn color on the east side of the range, and one morning we simply decided to try something different, so we went the opposite direction, ultimately ending up along the Nevada border. On a long, looping drive back toward the Sierra we drove down a long valley where we “discovered” a single, marvelous grove of aspens. We kept going, reaching a junction, and after exploring a bit more took a turn that headed back toward the area near Yosemite. Driving up a long, dry valley I looked west toward a range that stood between us and the Sierra and saw that there were aspens up high on its flanks.

On the trip when I made this photograph I really didn’t think I was likely to find aspens, and my plan was to head out here — again to the east of the Sierra — to do a bit of reconnaissance in preparation for returning a few weeks later during the normal peak of the fall color season. One thing led to another, and I ended up on some backroads passing through the very mountains that I had looked at on that previous visit, and much to my surprise there were already vast groves of aspens that had turned. To make this photograph I drove up to a rather high spot — 4WD was my friend on this little detour — from which I could look down at the forest and across to the highest peaks above them, past the still-green heart-shaped grove in the foreground.
