Table and Chairs

Table and Chairs
“Table and Chairs” — A table and chairs under a portico in Santiago de Compostela.

One of the pleasures of (warm-weather) travel in many parts of Europe is sitting at an outdoor table to have a drink or a coffee and watch the world go by. The table and chairs were ideally situated beneath the arch of a portico, perfect for that kind of activity along a narrow street in Santiago de Compostela.

The table was empty, but my photo archive suggests that this was not the case for long. The next photographs in my collection are a series of images of espresso cups and spoons… strongly suggesting that we must have ordered coffee, taken seats at the table, and engaged in precisely that activity.

Pond and Peaks, Evening

Pond and Peaks, Evening
“Pond and Peaks, Evening” — Eveing light on a subalpine pond beneath Sierra Nevada crest peaks.

This seems like a classic Sierra Nevada backcountry scene — a lovely subalpine lake (or in this case pond), soft and warm evening light, a bit of meadow, a forest, boulders, and the highest peaks looming beyond, still holding a bit of snow from the past winter. There is hardly anything finer than to find a comfortable rock, lean back, and simply watch such a scene as day transitions to night.

Truth be told, while I do certainly get to experience these scenes — as I did on this late-July backpack trip earlier this summer — I almost never sit back and just watch at this time of day. While I deeply appreciate all of the sensations evoked by a scene like this one, something familiar to me from decades in these mountains, the camera calls… and you are far more likely to find me out exploring with my camera than sitting back against that comfortable rock!

Orchard and Vineyards

Orchard and Vineyards
“Orchard and Vineyards” — Lush hill country, filled with vineyards and orchards, between Sabrosa and Alijo, Portugal.

One of the days of our Douro Valley walk in Portugal included a section between Sabrosa and Alijo. Between them we descended into this lovely valley full of vineyards and olive groves. We followed turn-by-turn directions from the walk’s organizers, and because of this I did not always track our precise location. That’s my long way of saying that I think this is the valley of the Rio Pinhão, though I’ve so far been unsuccessful in this spot on maps.

Regardless, it was a beautiful area. We came down a steep hill from the heights of Sabrosa, passing around and through vineyards. We reached the bottom of the valley, followed a road for a short distance, crossed a bridge and began the climb up the other side of the valley, a walk that would eventually bring us to our accommodations in the town of Alijo.

2024: Favorite Photos

For various reasons it took me a long time to commit to a set of favorite photographs of 2024. I chose the title of this list carefully, as I do every year. Note that it is not “Best Photgraphs” or “My 15 Favorite Photographs” or similar — it is just Favorite Photographs of 2024. Why is that? These are, indeed, among my “favorite” photograph from 2024, but I can’t say for sure that they are the favorite, much less that they are my “best” of the year.

Making this annual list is both a pleasure and a big challenge. The pleasure comes from reviewing hundreds of photographs and, in the process, both rediscovering some of them and reliving the experiences behind making them. The challenge? There are several. The first is that it is very hard to winnow them down to a manageable number. I probably stared with nearly 100, made a quick cut to half that many, labored to make the next 50% cut, and finally got the number down to the 15 you see here. (My target was a dozen, but now that I’m eight months late… it was time to just put them out there!)

The photographs include several themes in my photography: The Sierra Nevada, travel and street photography, the desert and ocean, wildlife and nature. To qualify as a “2024 Favorite” the photographs had to have first been publicly shared in that year. First up is a display of the whole set, followed further down that page with larger individual files with a bit more information.
