Sunrise fog drifts across springtime California hills under overcast skies.

The fact that I’m unable to be in the field making new photographs right now is a good reminder that photography is more than taking a camera into the field to find and capture subjects. There is a lot that happens before the exposure — perhaps years of accumulated experience with subjects and how they might be photographs. And there is a lot that happens after the exposure — review, selection, experimentation, carrying out the plan for images that I had in mind when I made the exposures, and more. For now I’m living photographically mostly in that post-exposure world.

I photographed this scene on a memorable morning last spring in a remote area of California hills. I was there to photograph flowers, but this lovely morning of fog and soft dawn light distracted me. It was one of those wonderful unexpected moments in photography that reminded me of how much serendipity is involved in this endeavor.

Between The Curves

Between The Curves
“Between The Curves” — Two large freeway overpasses cut through downtown San Francisco.

San Francisco is not far from where I live — less than an hour’s drive in good traffic (and three times that in really bad!) or a one-hour express train ride. When I have a day free I like to head up there on the train early in the morning and then explore, photographing as I go. San Francisco is a very walkable city, and I have a great choice of routes when I get off the train — I can head south to the an area with tons of new development, walk along the waterfront, go west toward an older (still somewhat) industrial area, or go north and head straight into the center of the downtown district.

I took the latter path on this day back in 2019, cross-crossing on east-west routes from time to time. Frequently when I come into The City by car I travel along the freeway route that mostly flies overhead, leaving only longer views. From underneath the City looks a lot different! I chose this view partly because I like the concept of the dark forms cutting off the view, but also because I was intrigued by the curving shape of the opening between the two overpasses.

Temblor Range HIlls, Spring Evening

A fence cuts across wildflower-covered Temblor Range hills on a spring evening.

This spring hillside was in early evening sun when I arrived, and as I set up to photograph the green folds and brightly colored wildflowers, the line between sunset light and shadow worked its way up the hillside. I looked around for a composition and thought that the old fence might tie things together.

At about this time each year, depending upon how wet the winter was, the California hills undergo a sudden and relatively brief transformation. First, winter rains cause last year’s seeds to come to life and send up carpets of new, green growth. Then, as the green phase approaches its conclusion, wildflowers show up. In a few places like this one, in an especially good year, entire mountains erupt in brilliant color.

A colorful doorway in San Francisco’s Chinatown district.

For the most part, the fronts of buildings in dense urban areas like San Francisco are not generally beautiful. As I photograph in such places I feel like the insides of such buildings may be interesting and feel like home, but that the outsides are often left in a more utilitarian state, with little attention to beautification or personalization. I see this in San Francisco, but I also see it in other major American urban areas and even in other countries that I’ve visited.

All of that makes the occasional exceptions even more notable. I’ve gotten to know a few of them found here and there in San Francisco areas that might be regarded as a bit “gritty.” This wildly colorful front entrance is on a Chinatown side street, not far from the hustle and bustle of one of the busiest streets.
